Rochester CTC President Don Supalla Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award
 January 30, 2013

On Monday, Jan. 28th, Rochester Community & Technical College (Minn.) President Don Supalla was the recipient of the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission’s (RASC), “Amateur Sports Lifetime Achievement Award” at their annual awards banquet.  The event featured Olympic Gold Medal gymnast Shannon Miller as the keynote speaker.  The following are comments made by RASC executive director Ed Hruska (pictured with Don).

A homegrown success story – our honoree tonight is a product of this area.  If you have ever met him you will immediately be impressed by his positive and supportive attitude.  Approach him about anything and the first words you will hear are usually “yes, I think we can find a way to do that” …or something similar.  He has been a champion of partnerships in representation of the institution he runs as well as for the overall good of our community.

In our world of sports we admire an individual who can support the development and pursuit of amateur athletics while always keeping the important issue of student education as a priority.  Tonight we honor this year’s lifetime achievement award to the person who has done this – and done it very well.

Over recent years he has worked with area legislators and community leaders to secure and preside over close to $100 million worth of construction projects that have benefited this entire community.  That teamwork translated into a University Center Rochester Regional Sports Center, Rochester Regional Stadium and Sports Bubble, Horticulture Technology Center, the renovation of the former gymnasium into a health science center, a new workforce center and the final phase of the RCTC Regional Stadium.  He has also been strong in his support for the development of local athletic field on the state property owned by the campus.  Fuad Mansour Soccer Complex, Rochester Youth Baseball Complex and RYFA football fields have all been developed on this land as well as the Rochester Fast Pitch Softball Complex to the east of the campus.  The addition of all these facilities and fields has vaulted RCTC into the position of being one of the most attractable community colleges in the country as well as strengthen our local youth athletic programs and facilities!

He always has been a strong supporter of bringing junior college national championships to the RCTC campus through partnerships with the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission.  Since 1999 – over thirty junior college national championships have been held on the RCTC campus as well as three bowl games at the regional stadium.  And you can bet he was present at every one of them. – never missing an opportunity to welcome guests and support the efforts of the athletes…always visible as the leader of the campus.

While we all enjoy the fun, excitement and competition we experience with amateur sports, the importance of education is one that must be the main focus.  Our honoree here tonight has accomplished this over his years of serving our community – and Rochester is a much better place because of his efforts.  Please join me in honoring this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award winner – Mr. Don Supalla!
