Gillette Downs Sheridan in Pivotal Region 9 Contest
 January 27, 2013

In an electric atmosphere in front of a capacity crowd at South Campus Gymnasium, the Gillette College Pronghorns started fast and never looked back as Chelsie Pitt, Kiela Garner, and Kenosha Wright all had double figure points at the half (15, 13, & 12 respecitvely) where they led their team to a 43-27 intermission advantage.  All three went on to finish with game highs of 21, 17, & 16 points as the Pronghorns defeated the Lady Generals 72-58 in a pivotal Region IX match-up.

The defensive pressure of the Gillette's guards limited the shooting percentages of Sheridan's shooters allowing only 18% from the three point line and 37% from the field overall.  On the other hand, the Pronghorns blistered the nets in the first half shooting 7 of 10 from 3 point range with Garner hitting 3 for 3,  Pitt hitting on 3 for 4, and Christina Davis hitting a trey all in the first half.  “It was a coming-out party for Kiela this evening,” Coach Will Rider said of Garner’s performance after the game.  “This will be a great confidence boost for her down the stretch.  That shooting exhibition gave us a tremendous boost of confidence early in the game and the rest of the team rallied around those performances to help keep the momentum on our side.”  Much of that momentum was felt on the boards as Gillette out-rebounded Sheridan by 13 boards to help the Pronghorns secure key possessions throughout the contest.  Alicia Carline, who is leading the nation in field goal percentage at 69%, only went 1 for 4 from the field but had 4 blocked shots at key times during the contest.

The win gives Sheridan their first Region loss of the season and boosts the Pronghorn Regional record to 6-3, solidifying a 3rd place spot with 7 games yet to play and 4 of them at home where they remain unbeaten on the year with 11 consecutive home wins.  If Gillette (19-4, 6-3) can finish the season with a strong finish, they should be able to secure one of the top two seeds in the Regional Tournament in March.  Gillette will take to the road again next Saturday as they travel to Glendive, MT to take on the Dawson College Buccaneers.  Game time will be at 5:30 pm and should be broadcast via a live video feed on the DCC website.
