No. 7 Lady Senators rally to defeat Dyersburg State, 80-65

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. – The seventh ranked Walters State Lady Senators found themselves in unfamiliar territory Saturday, trailing rival Dyersburg State midway through the second half. The final 10 minutes of the game however, belonged to WSCC.
The Lady Senators outscored the Lady Eagles by 15 in the final stretch run to escape with an 80-65 victory over Dyersburg State inside ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium.

With the win, Walters State improves to 18-1 on the year and 10-0 in Tennessee Community College Athletic Association play. The loss drops the Lady Eagles to 10-8 overall and 5-5 in league action.

Dyersburg State scored the opening four points of the game, but Karly Frye and Aisjah Roan keyed a 10-0 run that put the Lady Senators on top. The Lady Eagles cut the lead to 13-12, but Donnesha Shuler had six points in an 8-0 outburst to push the lead to 21-12 with 11:03 left in the half.

Dyersburg State cut the lead as low as four on two occasions, but Walters State had an answer each time. Roan hit 3-pointers both times, and she added another bucket that built the lead to 40-28 with 3:03 on the clock.

The Lady Eagles went to Kelsey Nowlin to cut into the margin, as she scored five points in a 10-3 run to close the half and trim the Lady Senators halftime lead to 43-38.

Walters State shot 45.5 percent (15 of 33) from the field in the first half, including 4 of 10 from long range, and they made 9 of 14 from the free throw line. Roan had 13 points, Shuler added 11 and Frye chipped in nine points and six assists in the opening 20 minutes.

Dyersburg State shot 46.7 percent (14 of 30) from the field, with Nowlin tossing in 20 points in the first half.

The Lady Eagles picked up where the left off before halftime in the early going of the second half, and eight points in the first six-plus minutes by Jalita Fason gave Dyersburg State a 54-50 lead with 13:22 left.

Shuler hit a pair of free throws, Monasia Bolduc converted a fast break layup, Roan added a pair of easy buckets and Shuler capped a 10-0 run with a bucket to give Walters State a 63-57 lead with 8:18 to go.

The Lady Eagles cut the lead to a single bucket on a 3-pointer by Monica Womack, but Shuler answered with two straight layups and four more free throws to make it 72-62 with 3:29 left to play.

Dyersburg State never got closer than seven points the rest of the way, and the Lady Senators scored the final eight points to close out the win.

Walters State shot 44.6 percent (25 of 56) from the field in the win, with Shuler tossing in a career-high 29 points in the victory. Roan added 19 points, and Bolduc tallied 11 points. Frye ended the game with nine points and nine assists, and Tangela Crenshaw had nine points and eight rebounds in the win.

The Lady Eagles shot 40.4 percent (23 of 57) in the contest, and Nowlin led them with 22 points. Fason added 11 points in the defeat.

The Lady Senators will be back in action Sunday when they host TCCAA rival Southwest Tennessee. Tipoff inside ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium is set for 2 p.m.
