 January 14, 2013

Warwick, R.I. – January 14, 2012:  The CCRI Knights Men’s Basketball team hosted the 2013 CCRI Invitational over the weekend at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse located on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick.  In Saturday's game the Knights hosted the Buccaneers of Mass Bay Community College form Framingham, MA for the Region XXI non-league game.  The Knights defeated the Buccaneers 103-71.  With the victory the Knights improve to 11-7 on the season.

Before the game began the Community College of Rhode Island welcomed the Mayor of Cranston, RI, The Honorable Mr. Allan Fung, who threw-up the ceremonial opening tip of the Knights game.  The Knights have three members of the team who are residents of Cranston including: Head Coach Rick Harris  and Bryan Yarce, Pat Marchand, and Steve Rush.

The Knights played with tremendous defensive intensity from the opening tip to the final buzzer.  Mass Bay stayed with the Knights for the first six minutes of the game  but  the Knights, with full court defensive pressure fueled by their depth, went on a 39-15 run to break the game open.  The Knights used that energy to take a 52-28 lead into halftime.  Head Coach Rick Harris commented “That may have been the best half defensively that we have played all season!” In the second half the Knights kept up the relentless defensive intensity to propel them to the  103-71 victory.  It was also the Knights first game this season in which they have hit the century mark !

Leading the way for the Knights was 2011-12 1st Team All American and Co-Captain Desmond Williams (Torrington, CT) who scored a game-high 26 points with six rebounds, three steals and two assists.  In addition, Williams scored his 1,000th career point in a Knights uniform on a 3-pointer late in the first half.  Desmond ended the game with 1,011 career points and is currently ranked No. 11 on the CCRI All-time scoring list ahead of Bobby DaCosta with 1,000 career points but behind Bobby Brooks who scored 1,032 career points. Also contributing nicely to the Knights victory was sophmore point guard Bryan Yarce with 17 points, 6 assists and 2 steals.Freshman Pat Marchand chipped in with 13 points and 6 rebounds and fellow freshman Rob Hazard ( North Providence, RI ) added 12 points.

Said Coach Harris " I met with the four captains this week about where our team is at this point in the season and they all told me that they would like to see us play more baseline to baseline pressure defense." " Being a fan of Nolan Richardson's  40 Minutes of Hell defense, I agreed 100% with my four sophmore captains." "They sure proved to all of us tonight that they want to make a commitment to playing this style of basketball ."

Sunday's second set of Invitational games will have   Mass Bay Community College taking on Genesee Community College and the Knights will take on DI power Monroe College.
