VU Women's Basketball falls 68-56 to visiting Wabash Valley
 January 13, 2013

The Vincennes University Women’s Basketball Team fell behind early and then clawed its way back into the game by halftime Saturday against visiting Wabash Valley, only to see the game slip away in the second 20 minutes, partially because of the Warriors’ size and rebounding advantage. The result was a 68-56 setback to Wabash Valley that dropped the Trailblazers’ record to 6-10 on the season.

Freshman Chelsea Jellison led VU with 10 points, including three 3-pointers, while freshman Deborah Martin and sophomore Monique Jones-Murphy had eight points each.

Wabash Valley’s four treys put the Trailblazers in a 26-12 hole early on but VU went on an 11-4 run to close it to 30-23 with about three minutes to play in the first half. The run was part of VU outscoring the Warriors 22-12 over the final eight minutes of the half to get within 38-34 at intermission. Jones-Murphy’s 3-pointer just before the buzzer put the exclamation mark on the mini-comeback.

VU tied it up, 42-42, early in the second half on a Yana Svintzitskaya jumper from the baseline.

The Trailblazers will travel to Shawnee on Wednesday for the front end of a women’s/men’s doubleheader. The women will tip off at 6:30 p.m. (Vincennes time) and the men will start at about 8:30 p.m. The ladies will stay on the road for a 2 p.m. game at Mineral Area on Jan. 19 and then head to Southwestern Illinois on Jan. 21 (6:30 p.m.) for another women’s/men’s doubleheader.
