WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: PIONEERS POST FIVE IN DOUBLE FIGURES IN WIN OVER LAKE COUNTY
 January 13, 2013

ELGIN, Ill. --- The Prairie State College women’s basketball team wasted little time in getting its conference portion of the schedule off on the right foot Saturday at the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Tip-Off Classic at Elgin.

The Pioneers led from buzzer to buzzer, walking off the floor with a commanding 70-40 victory  over Lake County firmly in hand.

PSC (7-7, 1-0) saw five of its players reach double figures in the scoring column as sophomore center Danielle Zandstra (Heritage Christian H.S., Ind.) and freshman forward Shanterra Jones (East Chicago Central H.S., Ind.) each posted 15-point showings.

The 6-foot-1 Zandstra, in just her second game back from a fractured foot, fell one rebound shy of her first double-double of the campaign. She also picked up a pair of blocks and steals.

In addition to her 15 tallies, Jones locked down her first career double-double after ripping down a career-high 10 rebounds.

Freshman forward Mandie Green (Homewood-Flossmoor H.S.) and freshman guard Nijea Dixon (Joliet Central H.S.) each delivered 14-point outings.

Green also secured 10 boards of her own for her first career double-double while Dixon made off with eight steals.

Sophomore point guard Latoi Merriweather (Merrillville H.S., Ind.) also added 12 points.

The Pioneers used 10-3 game-opening run to set the pace for the tilt and headed into the intermission solidly in charge of the contest 37-17.

PSC established its largest lead of the afternoon at 49-19 with 13;59 to play following a layup by Zandstra, courtesy of an assist by Nixon.

PSC will now take on Waubonsee in Sugar Grove Tuesday (5:25 p.m.).
