December 9, 2012
The Vincennes University Women's Basketball Team capped off its own VU Classic Saturday night with a 60-57 win over Cincinnati State, enabling the Trailblazers to take both of its games in the event and claim its third consecutive victory.
Freshman Shelby Parmer had 17 of her game-high 20 points - including 5-of-7 free throw shooting - in the second half to help seal the win for VU (5-8). Sophomore Zhanna Chukhrii finished with 17 (three 3-pointers) and freshman Chelsea Jellison scored 11 (three 3-pointers).
In the second half, the Trailblazers stretched their 26-17 halftime lead to 42-31 with 12:16 to go, but The Surge lived up to its name and surged to within a point at 44-43 with the help of a 12-2 run. VU then scored seven unanswered points to open it back up some. With 2:56 left, VU led 51-45.
A pair of clutch free throws by Parmer a short time later helped the Trailblazers cling to a 53-48 lead, and Parmer kept the ball in her hands to get fouled and can two more from the line. Parmer's clutch steal then led to Chukhrii knocking down a jumper to make it 57-54 and VU held on for the win.
VU is now idle until after the holidays when the Trailblazers open the second semester portion of their schedule with a trip to South Suburban in South Holland, IL, on Jan. 3. That game begins at 5 p.m.
