Overtime Loss for TC3 Women
 November 28, 2012

Panthers Fall to Herkimer 69-66

DRYDEN, N.Y. – Despite putting three players in double figures scoring and having another player set a school record for rebounds, the Tompkins Cortland Community College women's basketball team came up just short at home Wednesday, falling to Herkimer County Community College 69-66 in overtime. The loss drops TC3 to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in Region III contests. Herkimer improves to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in Region III.

The Panthers enjoyed the biggest lead of the night in the first half, using a 7-0 run capped by a basket by Audrey Kate Ordway (Dryden H.S./Dryden) to lead 22-13 with 7:11 left in the half. Herkimer responded with a 12-1 run to take the lead 25-23, but TC3 came back to hold a 33-32 lead at the break.

In the second half, TC3 extended the lead to 46-41 on a Becca Holton (Cape Fear Academy (N.C.)/Reykjavik, Iceland) basket with 12:55 left. Aside from one possession, the Panthers held the lead the rest of the half until the final minute. With TC3 leading 60-56 after two free throws by Holton with 1:11 left, Herkimer responded with a three pointer with 55 seconds left, followed by a steal and a basket to lead 61-60 with 31 seconds left. After holding for the last shot, TC3’s Kenisha Adams (Hillcrest H.S./Queens) was fouled with 6.4 seconds left on the clock. She missed the first, but came up big on the second, tying the game and sending it to overtime.

In overtime, Chelsey Kern (Candor H.S./Candor) opened the scoring with a free throw, but Herkimer’s long-range shooting came through again, connecting on a three-pointer to take the lead. Another basket made it 66-62 before Adams and Holton each scored baskets to tie the game back at 66-66. Yet another Herkimer three-pointer, the ninth of the game for the Generals, proved to be the game winner with 1:36 left on the clock. Three misses, including on a long three-pointer at the buzzer, left the Panthers on the wrong end of the 69-66 final.

Ordway put her name in the TC3 record book with 26 rebounds, one more than the previous single game record set by Barbara Naylor in 2007. Holton led all scorers with 26 points to go with six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Kern had a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, while also posting five blocked shots. Meghan Ideman (Moravia H.S./Moravia) netted 14 points while pulling down eight boards and Adams had a solid line of seven points and nine rebounds.

TC3 takes part in Corning’s Tarantelli Classic this weekend, with the opening round game Friday against SUNY Delhi.
