Senators drop 68-57 decision at Southwest Tennessee

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Walters State Senators could not overcome a sluggish start Saturday at Tennessee Community College Athletic Association rival Southwest Tennessee, as a 19-point first half led to a 68-57 defeat inside Verties Sails, Jr. Gymnasium.The Senators (3-3, 1-2 TCCAA) made only 27.3 percent of their shots in the first half and failed to connect on a 3-pointer in the first 20 minutes as they fell behind 33-19 at halftime.

Walters State made a run in the second half, cutting the deficit into single digits in the final eight minutes on two occasions but they never threatened to make a play for the lead against the homestanding Saluqis (3-1, 3-1).

Southwest shot 50 percent (27 of 54) in the contest from the field, but they made only 3 of 17 from long range. The Saluqis also made only 11 of 20 from the free throw line, but they scored 19 points off of 14 Walters State turnovers in the win.

Marshun Newell paced the Saluqis with 22 points in the win, and he collected five rebounds, dished out four assists and had three steals in 30 minutes of play. Justin Street tallied 12 points and grabbed six boards in the win as well.

The Senators finished the night shooting 39.1 percent (25 of 64) from the floor, including 4 of 13 from long distance. Walters State made 3 of 5 from the charity stripe, as Southwest was whistled for only 11 fouls in the contest.

Leland Robinson led Walters State with 15 points and nine rebounds in the game, while Tyler Ailshie and Elgrin Wilson added nine points each and Denard Williams had eight in the loss.

The Senators will be back in action Tuesday when they host Spartanburg Methodist inside ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
