HCC Sports Information

Five players scored in double figures as the No. 13 Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team had season highs in points scored and field-goal percentage as the Blue Dragons rolled over the Redlands Cougars 96-77 in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson (4-0) broke 90 points for the first time this season and shot 59.6 percent against the Cougars (0-3). The Blue Dragons shot 64.5 percent in the second half.

Sophomore Alex Davis just missed a second-straight double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds. Davis was 6 of 8 shooting overall and 7 of 10 from the free-throw line. Davis also dished out a career-high five assists.

Sophomore D’Von Campbell had 17 points, a career-high five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Sophomore A.J. Spencer scored in double figures for the fourth-consecutive game with 12 points on 5 of 8 shooting, five rebounds and a career-high three blocked shots.

Sophomore Rozell Nunn had a season-high 12 points with a pair of 3-pointers. Freshman Kadeem Allen had 11 points.

The Blue Dragons shot 34 of 57 percent overall, 4 of 10 from 3-point range and 24 of 37 from the free-throw line. HCC had a small 37-34 rebounding advantage. The Dragons had a season-high nine blocked shots.

Five players also scored in double figures for Redlands. Jared Griffin was 10 of 10 shooting from the free-throw line and finished with a team-high 15 points. Corey Frazier had three 3-point goals and had 13 points. Revey Norton had 12 points, while Quienton Paras and Tavarion Nix had 10 point each.

HCC allowed the most points to an opponent this season, hitting 24 of 59 from the field (40.7 percent). The Cougars were 5 of 12 from 3-point range and 24 of 40 from the foul line.

The Blue Dragons opened the game in a 13-2 run over the first 3 minutes, 24 seconds with Nunn hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to cap the run. Redlands closed within 21-16 with 12:06 left on a Frazier 3-pointer. Sophomore Jack Pyle responded with a 3-pointer and the closest the Cougars got after that was six points.

Leading 29-21, the Blue Dragons went on a 14-2 run to break the game open. Davis sank two free throws with 4:30 to play to give the Dragons a 45-23 lead.

The Dragons took a 50-35 lead at halftime lead after shooting 53.8 percent from the floor in the first half.

Redlands closed to within 12 points in the second half on five occasions, the last time with 12:31 to play after a Nix basket pulled the Cougars within 66-54. The Blue Dragons re-established control of the game with a 10-1 run, taking a 76-55 lead after back-to-back Davis baskets.

Wednesday’s game as the first of a five-game-in-10-day stretch for Hutchinson. The Blue Dragons will play host to Johnson County at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

GAME NOTES – This was the first meeting ever between HCC and Redlands. … This was HCC’s all-time 1,601st victory. … The Blue Dragons are 30-1 against non-Jayhawks Conference teams under head coach Steve Eck. … The 50 first-half points were the second time HCC has reached the 50-point plateau for a half this season. … Nathan Jackson was 4 of 4 shooting with a season-high eight points.
