Senators record first win of the season

ELIZABETHTON — The Walters State men’s basketball team picked up their first win of the season Wednesday with a 73-50 road win over the Milligan College JV squad.

After allowing 91 points in a season-opening loss, the Senators (1-1) picked up the defensive effort in Wednesday’s win, allowing the homestanding Buffaloes to shoot just 28.1 percent (18 of 64) in the contest.

Conversely, Walters State ended the night making 42.5 percent (24 of 80) from the field, and they outrebounded Milligan, 54-46. The Senators also forced 15 turnovers in the contest, leading to easy buckets on the other end of the floor.

Walters State led 18-10 midway through the first half, and they rolled to a 38-25 lead at halftime. The Buffs cut the deficit to 52-45 with 9:09 left in the game, but the Senators closed the game on a 21-5 run to put it away.

Leland Robinson continued his hot start to the season, leading Walters State with 16 points in the win, and he added eight rebounds. Denard Williams recorded 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots for the Senators, while Kelvin Key had seven points and six boards.

Cedarius Taylor, Jeb Brewer, Theodore Allen and Tyler Ailshie had six points each in the win, with Taylor adding eight assists. Ailshie and Elgrin Wilson each hauled in six boards in the win.

The Senators will be back in action Saturday when they open Tennessee Community College Athletic Association play at home against Roane State. Tipoff inside ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium is set for 7 p.m.
