San Jacinto College soccer ends season in penalty kick shootout
 November 7, 2012

HOUSTON – In a neck-and-neck match to open the 2012 Region XIV Tournament, San Jacinto College was defeated in overtime by Paris Junior College in a penalty kick shootout.

Both teams held their own during the intense match, with a scoreless first half of overtime. Both teams each scored a point in the second half of overtime, forcing the game to go to penalty kicks in which San Jacinto College sophomore forward Jaime Rodriguez’s shot was blocked, allowing Paris to advance in regionals.

This season was the first season for Interim Head Coach Ian Spooner. In his fifth season overall with San Jacinto College, Spooner took on the challenge ready to go. “I enjoyed leading this group of young men throughout this season,” said Spooner. “Going into the season, I knew it would be rough because we only had four returning players, but the guys played well and showed me that they are capable to play with some of the top colleges in the nation.” Also joining the team this season were Mira Mupier, assistant coach, and Carie Mueller, athletic trainer. This is the first season with San Jacinto College for both Mupier and Mueller.

Rodriguez proved to be one of the major scorers for San Jacinto College this season, with 17 points behind eight goals and one assist. Freshmen forwards Pablo Vasquez and Sito Seoane held the top two scoring and assist records this season with Vasquez scoring 25 points, Seoane scoring 23 points, and 16 assists between the two. Overall San Jacinto College ended this season with a 12-4-1 record, including a 6-2 conference record.

“I definitely think we could have done better, but by no means am I disappointed in the season that we had,” added Spooner. “We will be looking to build on this year’s season by adding a solid recruiting class to the 15 players that will be returning next Fall. Just like every year, we will be striving to win regionals, district, and nationals.”
