ELLISVILLE – It took a while, but the Jones County Junior College Bobcats opened the 2012-13 basketball season with a win here Thursday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
Donta Pittman led five Bobcats in double figures with 17 points as JCJC defeated Delgado Community College (La.) 95-83 in head coach Jay Ladner’s debut with the team.
The game, which was scheduled for a 7 p.m. start, did not tip off until after 8 p.m. Delgado, based out of New Orleans, La., had transportation issues and was not able to leave until after 5 p.m.
Officials decided to postpone the women’s game, which was scheduled to start at 5 p.m., and just play the men’s game.
The JCJC vs. Delgado women’s game has tentatively been rescheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, but that must be confirmed on Friday. The Lady Bobcats held an intrasquad scrimmage in place of their regular game.
Bobcats 95, Dolphins 83
Delgado jumped out to a 10-2 lead just five minutes into play and matched their longest lead of the night at 22-14 with 11:43 left in the first half when Brian Elphage scored.
But JCJC then went on an 18-2 run to take command. A putback by Detrick Davis gave the Bobcats the lead for good at 26-24. A Cory Jackson offensive rebound capped the run and gave Jones a 32-24 lead with 5:51 left.
The Bobcats would stretch the lead to 43-33 with 2:20 to play in the opening half when Wesley Bell-Blackmon drained a 3-pointer from the right corner. JCJC led 46-38 at halftime.
Delgado got within 57-53 with 12:44 to play in the game when Melvin Davis made two free throws.
Jones would then expand the lead to 71-59 with 9:27 showing when Tanner Wozniak hit a 12-footer. The Dolphins would trim the margin to 74-68 with 6:36 to play on a 3-point play by Davis, but that would be as close as they would get.
JCJC took its longest lead of the game when Dontavious Lewis hit a 3-pointer from the right corner to make it 91-76 with 1:18 remaining.
Wozniak and Blackmon had 15 points each for Jones, while Detrick Davis had 13 and Lewis finished with 12.
