Senators finish fourth in Walters State Fall Classic
 October 30, 2012

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. --- It took seven holes of playoff golf between Tusculum’s Warren Cheney and Tennessee Wesleyan’s Cody Godfrey to decide the individual winner of the Walters State Fall Classic held at The County Club, Inc. on Tuesday.
Cheney shot 78 during Monday’s first round but improved to fire a 34 in the weather-shortened event. Godfrey followed up his first round score of 72 with a 40 in the second round as both golfers finished tied with a score of 112. Cheney and Godfrey went toe-to-toe for six holes, draining putt after put until Cheney finally got the winning shot on the seventh hole.

The play of Cheney and Godfrey impressed longtime Walters State head golf coach Bill Gardner who accompanied the two golfers in their playoff round. “I saw seven holes of the best golf I have seen in a long time,” Gardner said. “They struck it well and they didn’t make a mistake. I felt like Warren and Cody could have played head to head for 18 holes. They were striking the ball and making great golf shots and I really enjoyed watching that.”

Cheney and the rest of his Tusculum teammates took home the team championship with a score of 459. Tennessee Wesleyan finished second with a score of 461. Pfeiffer was third as they shot 468, followed by Walters State’s Blue team at 473, Lincoln Memorial’s 474 to finish fifth and Walters State’s White team who rounded out the scoring at 499.

The WSCC Blue team finished fourth with a team score of 316-157-473. Zach Briggs had the best finish for any of the Walters State golfers as he finished tied for ninth with a score of 116. Andrew Hall tied for 12th by shooting 117, Will Wright and Brad Hawkins tied for 20th with a score of 121 and Jack Gillespie was tied for 23rd at 123.

Cory Martin had the best finish for the Walters State White team as he placed in a tie for 23rd at 123. Rounding out the Walters State White scoring were Ryne Thompson (124, T-26th), Cody Johnson (127, T-29th), Elliott Taliferro (127, T-29th) and Chase Adkins (128, 31st).
