LADY DRAGONS SETTLE FOR SPLIT WITH JEFFERSON, INDIAN HILLS

HILLSBORO, Mo. – The final weekend of the regular season started on a high note for the 17th-ranked Hutchinson Community College volleyball team on Friday at the Jefferson College Invitational. Day 1 simply didn’t end the way it started for the Lady Dragons.

Just 30 minutes after completing a four-set victory over Jefferson College, the Lady Dragons were decisively swept by Indian Hills. Hutchinson dropped the first set to Jefferson 30-32, but rallied to win the final three sets 27-25, 25-20, 25-20. Indian Hills then rolled past Hutchinson 25-20, 25-21, 25-17.

The 2012 Jayhawk West champion Lady Dragons (22-7) will finish the regular season against two of the nation’s best teams in No. 4 Iowa Western at 10 a.m. on Saturday and against No. 12 Missouri State-West Plains at 2 p.m.

JEFFERSON RECAP

Freshman Teresa Wade and sophomore Gabby Rushton had 13 kills each to lead the Lady Dragons to a 3-1 victory over Jefferson College, defeating the Vikings for the second time this season.

Rushton hit .217 in pounding down a career-high kill total. Wade hit .170 as the Lady Dragons had a balanced offensive attack. Wade also had her 11th double-double of the season with 18 digs and three services aces.

Sophomore Emily Oberlin tied a career high with nine kills, sophomore Jade Nelson had eight and sophomore Shayne Haley had six kills.

Sophomore Scout Heizer had 26 set assists, while sophomore Ashlyn Westerman had 20 assists.

Freshman libero Samantha Lackey had her eight 20-dig match with 24 digs. She added two aces.

The Lady Dragons totaled 10 blocks and nine service aces.

INDIAN HILLS RECAP

Rushton led Hutchinson in the second match on Friday with nine kills, while Wade and sophomore Kayla Karmazyn had six kills each. But after two straight solid offensive performances against Barton and Jefferson, Indian Hills totally took the Lady Dragons out of their offense on Friday.

Heizer finished with 19 assists and Westerman had 16 assists. Lackey had a team-high 17 digs.

Hutchinson had just four team blocks.

Last season, Hutchinson defeated Indian Hills in five sets at the Jefferson Tournament.

After Saturday, the Lady Dragons begin postseason play on Wednesday as Cloud County comes to the Sports Arena for the opening round of the Region VI Tournament. Match time is 6:30 p.m.
