Hinds CC football beats Pearl River in season finale, 26-16
 October 26, 2012

RAYMOND – The Hinds Community College football team ended the 2012 season in a big way on Thursday night in Poplarville, defeating Pearl River Community College, 26-16.

The victory in the finale moved the Eagles overall record to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the South division, while the Wildcats of Pearl River fell to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the South division.

The ground and pound formula that has proven to be successful for Hinds this season worked yet again on Thursday, as the Eagles finished with 323 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 47 carries.

Darryan Ragsdale (Pelahatchie) was extremely effective, as the sophomore had only nine carries, but ended up with 137 yards and one touchdown.

Quadarias Mireles (Boynton Beach, Fla.) was the workhorse for the Eagles all night, carrying the rock 21 times for 111 yards.

Hinds finished with 387 yards of total offense, and Pearl River ended up with 332 yards of total offense, led by quarterback Dylan Favre, who was 22-38 for 233 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Ragsdale got the scoring started for both teams late in the first quarter when he rumbled in from 27 yards out for the score. Tyler Poe (Pearl) knocked the PAT through to put Hinds up, 7-0, with 3:13 left in the first quarter.

The Ragsdale touchdown was set up by a 59-yard interception return by Ledarion Robinson (Utica). The freshman had a big night for the Eagles, finishing with a forced fumble to go along with two solo tackles and two assists.

Hinds extended the lead with 8:20 to go in the first half when sophomore quarterback Christopher Nelson (Theodore, Ala.) found Khiry Lucas (Cleveland) in the back of the endzone for a seven-yard touchdown strike, and Hinds now led, 14-0.

The touchdown reception was the first of the season for Lucas, a freshman wide receiver.

The Eagles looked to be running away with the game with five minutes to go in the third quarter when running back Joshua Dixon (Jackson) scored from two yards out. The Poe PAT was no good, however, and Hinds now led, 20-0.

The Wildcats of Pearl River would mount a comeback to make the game respectable when Jeffrey Dyson took the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for the score to seemingly give the River a jolt of momentum. Brandon King drilled the point after to cut the lead to 20-7 with 4:45 in the third quarter.

Nelson would give the Eagles a bit of momentum back and move the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter when he hooked up with Quantavius Leslie (Hogansville, Ga.) on a beautiful 32-yard touchdown pass over the middle of the field. The Eagles went for two, but failed to convert, and now led, 26-7, with 11:58 in the final frame.

King made a 27-yard field goal with 9:08 left, and Favre threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Tyshean Norris with 3:38 left in the game, but it was not enough to overcome the early Hinds lead.

The Hinds run defense was stellar all night, led by sophomore linebacker Mitchell Hoskins (Port Gibson), who ended his Eagles career with seven solo tackles and one assist.

Gaige Washington (Clinton) had five solos and three assists, and Risean Broussard (Lake Charles, La.) had six solos and one assist, including three tackles for a loss, to pace the Hinds defense.
