NJCAA Volleyball Players of the Week - Oct. 15-21, 2012

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Mattie Tigges (New Mexico Military), Hayley Mertens (Allen County CC, Kan.) and Rachel Carey (Fashion IT, N.Y.) have been named NJCAA Volleyball Players of the Week for matches Oct. 15-21.


DIVISION I PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Mattie Tigges – New Mexico Military Institute
Middle Blocker – Tucson, Ariz. – Canyon del Oro High School

In six matches last week for the Broncos, Tigges utilized her strong and accurate attack to earn victory in each contest. The freshman averaged 3.7 kills across 20 sets, boasting a .457 hitting percentage. Tigges was also involved at the net, averaging 1.05 blocks per set for the week. With the regular season winding down, New Mexico Military and Tigges play host to Frank Phillips College (Texas) Wednesday before heading to Midland College (Texas) Saturday.


DIVISION II PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Hayley Mertens – Allen County Community College, Kan.
Outside Hitter – Kingman, Kan. – Kingman High School

Earning player of the week honors for the second time in 2012, Mertens provided the Red Devils with effort on both ends of the court in their two matches last week. Playing in eight sets, Mertens averaged 4.63 kills and compiled a .390 hitting percentage. Defensively, the sophomore posted 4.25 digs per set on the week. Allen County and Mertens are set to battle Neosho County CC (Kan.) Wednesday.


DIVISION III PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Rachel Carey – Fashion Institute of Technology, N.Y.
Outside Hitter – Houston, Texas – Jersey Village High School

Carey could not have picked a better time to heat up for the Tigers. With the regular season drawing to a close, the freshman put together her best week of 2012 with 2.91 kills and 3.45 digs per set. In a five-set win over Suffolk County CC (N.Y.), Carey put her defense on display with 25 digs. Earning the top seed in the Region 15 Tournament, Carey and the Tigers kick off their postseason Wednesday against Borough of Manhattan CC (N.Y.).
