Pearl River downs No. 13 Lady Bobcats in state soccer finals

POPLARVILLE – The No. 13 Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats came up short in their bid for a state championship here Sunday afternoon.

The Pearl River Community College Lady Wildcats scored a goal late in the first half and early in the second half and beat JCJC, 2-0, here at the PRCC Soccer Field.

The Lady Bobcats end the season with a 13-1-1 mark. The loss snapped a 12-game JCJC winning streak.

Pearl River is now 11-2 on the season.

The Lady Wildcats had a couple of chances early to score, but could not. Jones then took control for several minutes, but could not find the goal.

Finally, Pearl River’s Karly Mitchell scored at 41:36 off an assist by Christina Gentry to make it 1-0.

The Lady Wildcats made it 2-0 at 50:30 when Kacy Mixon scored.

JCJC had several opportunities after that, as Kelsey Cochran and Temple Hughs both had shots on goal. But the Lady Bobcats were unable to capitalize.

Pearl River outshot JCJC, 13-12. Hannah McCarty was in goal for PRCC, while Aundrea Borchardt was in goal for JCJC.

Pearl River will now face Meridian Community College at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Lamar School in Meridian for the Region 23 title.
