SUMMIT---Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College broke open a 14-14 tie with 41 unanswered points to blow out the winless Southwest Bears 69-17 and set up an MACJC South Division showdown with Co-Lin next week.

“I like the way the guys responded to Southwest early in the game,” said Gulf Coast head coach Steve Campbell, whose team has now won six in a row over Southwest. “We set the tempo throughout the game and never let up.”

After Southwest took the opening kickoff 75 yards and scored on a 3-yard touchdown run by Laderick Turner, Gulf Coast responded with a 65-yard kickoff return from JoJo Snell followed by a 5-yard TD run by Byron Nettles to tie the game at 7-7.

Then the No. 9 Bulldogs (6-1, 3-1) busted open  the 14-14 tie midway through the second quarter with two straight touchdown connections from Clint Hatten to D’haquille Williams, one from 56 yards and one from 18 yards out to make it 28-14. Hatten finished the game 21-28 for 306 yards and two TD’S while Williams grabbed 9 catches for 166 yards and two scores.

Two field goals from Stephen Brauchle and an 11-yard TD run by Detrick Goff made it 41-14 at halftime.

Goff, Eli Hughes, and back-up quarterback Quentin Wheeler all scored rushing touchdowns in the second half to complete a dominating performance on the road against the Bears (0-6, 0-4). Gulf Coast racked up 513 total yards…207 on the ground. Meanwhile the defense forced two big turnovers in the secondquarter which led to 10 Bulldog points.

“The guys stayed focused all game long and cashed in on some explosive plays,” Campbell added. “We have to hold serve the rest of the way starting with a tough one next week at Co-Lin.”
