McPHERSON – Only Division I Wichita State stood in the way of the 21st-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s cross country team from a second team championship on Saturday as the Blue Dragons finished second at the McPherson College Lakeside Shootout.

Wichita State placed four runners in the top six to finish well in front of the pack with 35 points. The Blue Dragons had two runners in the top five and three in the top 11 to finish as team runner-up with 66 points. Sterling College was third with 99 points.

Freshman Oberlin Rojas once again led Hutchinson with a third-place overall showing and a time of 27:29.62 on the slow, wet 8K course. Only Wichita State runners Kelvin Buseinei (26:44.24) and Ryan Hocker (27:09.14) finished ahead of Rojas.

John Murphy III continued his strong freshman season with a fifth-place showing in a time of 27:52.27.

Sophomore Isaac Williams returned from injury to finish 11th overall with a time of 28:23.77.

Sophomore Zac Webber and Kevin Marks were HCC’s fourth and fifth runners and they placed 24th and 25th, respectively. Webber’s time of 29:57.63 and Marks’ time was right behind him in 29:58.99.

Also competing for the Blue Dragons were freshman Helam Hernandez (34th, 31;02.52), Jesse Lyle (39th, 32.30.93) and , Mario Perez (42nd, 32:54.03)

The Blue Dragons will now compete at the Region VI Championships on October 27 at Overland Park.
