JCJC men's soccer team qualifies for playoffs
October 14, 2012SUMMIT – The Jones County Junior College men’s soccer team clinched a playoff berth in dramatic fashion here late Friday afternoon. Northeast Jones freshman JaMarcus Ducksworth scored on a header off an assist by West Harrison freshman Erik Johnson at 3:34 in overtime to lift the Bobcats to a 2-1 victory over the Southwest Mississippi Community College Bears. It marks the fourth straight win for the Bobcats and gives them a 4-2-1 record in the MACJC South Division. JCJC will finish second in the division behind Pearl River (7-0) and ahead of Mississippi Gulf Coast (3-4) and Southwest (2-4-1). That means the Bobcats will head to the MACJC State Tournament, which will be played Oct. 20-21 at the site of the South men’s champion, Pearl River. The Bobcats are tentatively scheduled to play at 1 p.m. on Oct. 20 vs. the North men’s champion. In women’s play on Friday, the 14th-ranked Lady Bobcats improved to 11-0-1 with a 4-0 win over the Lady Bears. The JCJC women can claim the outright South Division title with a win over Pearl River at home on Tuesday. If the Lady Bobcats are the top seed from the South, they are tentatively slated to play the No. 2 team from the North at 3 p.m. on Oct. 20. If they are the second seed, they are tentatively scheduled to play the North champion at 11 a.m. on Oct. 20. Bobcats 2, Bears 1 (OT) The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead at 3:50 when Ducksworth scored his first goal. Southwest tied the game at 82:36 when Jake Saltalamacchia scored. That set the stage for Ducksworth’s game-winner. George County’s Alan Davidson was in goal for Jones. The Bobcats outshot the Bears, 16-5. JCJC improves to 5-6-1 overall. The Bears fall to 2-9-2 overall. The Bobcats play their final home regular season game on Tuesday against Pearl River. It will be “Sophomore Night” for both Bobcat teams. The women’s game begins at 5 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7 p.m. Southwest ends the regular season at Co-Lin on Wednesday. Lady Bobcats 4, Lady Bears 0 JCJC scored a team goal at 36:08 to take a 1-0 halftime lead. Greene County freshman Kelsey Cochran scored at 58:13 off an assist by Northeast Jones sophomore Morgan Pace to make it 2-0. Oak Grove sophomore Cassidy Brinson assisted Cochran at 75:34. Northeast Jones freshman Lacey Guthrie ended the scoring at 85:43 off an assist by Oak Grove sophomore Kimberly Murray. D’Iberville sophomore Aundrea Borchardt was in goal for the Lady Bobcats. JCJC outshot Southwest, 13-1. The Lady Bears fall to 4-9 overall, 1-6 in the division. |
