Senators finish eighth at Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate

SUNSET BEACH, N.C. --- The Walters State Senators shot their best round of the young season Tuesday at the Jones Course at Sea Trail Golf Links and moved up the leaderboard one spot to finish in eight place in the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate in Sunset Beach, N.C.

The Senators fired a team score of 289 (1-over par) in the final round, giving them a two-day total of 7-over par 583, which was 20 shots behind the winner and first round leader Mount Olive (563).

Barton College finished second at 10-under par 566, followed by Wingate (568), Belmont Abbey (570) and Lincoln Memorial (570) in the top five. King College was sixth at 571, while Newberry (574), Walters State, North Georgia (586) and Brevard (587) rounded out the top 10. Post was 11th at 595, while Lenoir-Rhyne (596), Limestone (604), Mars Hill (617) and Paine (647) rounded out the 15-team field.

Andrew Hall (72-73) and Brad Hawkins (73-72) paced the Senators with a 145 total each, which was good enought for a tie for 25th place. Zach Briggs (76-70) fired a 2-over par 146 to tie for 31st overall, and Jack Gillespie (73-76) finished in a tie for 43rd at 149. Ryne Thompson (76-74) added a 150 total to tie for 51st in the event.

Barton's Daniel Claytor, the first round leader with a 68, shot a final round 69 to win the individual title by one-shot with a 7-under par total of 137.

The Senators will return to action on Oct. 15-16 when they travel to Pineville, Ky., to participate in the Lincoln Memorial Invitational at Wasioto Winds Golf Course.
