Dean Upends Louisburg; Bulldogs, Lions Share Top Spot in Standings Four Teams Ranked in NJCAA's Top 16

Oct. 2, 2012 - Nationally ranked Dean and ASA highlight this week’s matchups. Dean, ranked 16th, enters the contest having won four-straight games while ASA, ranked 10th,?is 5-0. The Avengers have scored 311 points this season while Dean averages “only” 35 points per game. Among conference members, the teams are one-two in total offense, ASA averaging 470 yards per contest while Dean averages 415.8 yards per game and feaures the league’s top passing attack (257.2?ypg). ASA?has the nation’s second-best rushing attack at 298.2 ypg.

Elsewhere in league play, No. 6 Nassau travels to Hudson Valley and Lackawanna is at Erie. In nonconference play, No. 15 Louisburg is host to Monroe.

National Rankings:?Nassau and ASA?both moved up one spot. The Lions are now sixth while ASA?is 10th. Despite the loss to Dean, Louisburg is 15th. The Bulldogs are 16th. The poll includes the Football Computer Rankings which is worth 33 percent of the poll with the other 67 percent coming from the voters.

Players of the Week: Dean’s Trevor Vasey and Lackawanna’s Dayron Wilson and De’Chavon Hayes were named the NEFC’s Players of the Week.

Offense - Vasey, a 6-foot-6, 225-pound freshman quarterback from Cumberland, R.I./St. Raphael Academy, wins the award for the second time this season after throwing for 386 yards and five touchdowns in Dean’s 36-22 win at previously unbeaten and No. 8 Louisburg. He threw touchdown passes of 10, 17, 25, 30, and 53 yards. Overall, Vasey completed 16 of 26 passes without an interception.

Defense - Wilson, a 5-10, 196-pound sophomore linebacker from Woodbridge, Va./Garfield, recorded 11 solo tackles as Lackawanna suffered a 31-24 loss to No. 7 Nassau. Wilson also recorded two tackles for a loss in the contest.

Special Teams - Hayes, a 5-10, 188-pound freshman running back/return specialist from Richmond, Va./Varina, returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown in the Falcons’ game against Nassau. He also returned two other kickoffs for 53 total yards.

Last Week: Dean opened a 29-7 lead after three quarters and recorded a 36-22 win over previously unbeaten Louisburg. Louisburg quarterback Madison Mills threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns but also had three interceptions.

Nassau remained unbeaten with a 31-24 win over Lackawanna. The Lions’ defense intercepted two passes. The Falcons’ DeChavon Hayes returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown while Davonta Farrell threw for 213 yards and two touchdowns.

Erie returned to the win column with a 7-6 victory over Hudson Valley. The?Kats’ Jacob Kutz blocked an extra-kick attempt with 45 seconds remaining in the first half to keep Erie in the lead.

Kutz, a defensive lineman, finished the game with 10 tackles (3 solo/7 assists), including three tackles for a loss and a quarterback sack. Linebacker Devin Coney led ECC with 13 tackles (6 solo/7 assists), the third-most tackles by a Kat in a single game.

NJCAA?Defensive Player of the Week: Nassau defensive back Marc Mauro became the second-straight NEFC?player honored as the NJCAA?Defensive Player of the Week. Mauro was chosen Sept. 26. Erie defensive back Dorian Polk was the Sept. 19 selection.

More Rankings: Dean climbed to 12th following the win over Louisburg. Nassau CC?remained 20th and ASA?is 22nd in the rankings by JCGridiron.com. The poll includes the NJCAA and California programs.

Bowl is the Goal: The Carrier Dome Bowl, sponsored by the NEFC, takes place Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y. The game features the NEFC champion against an opponent to be named later.
