Lady Senators close inaugural season with five-game win over Maryville
 October 2, 2012

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. – The Walters State Lady Senators volleyball team went more than a month without losing a game. Monday night in their inaugural season finale, they were pushed to the brink.

The Lady Senators survived a five-game marathon, defeating the visiting Maryville Lady Scots, 25-19, 18-25, 25-13, 19-25 and 16-14 to close out their first season with an eight-match winning streak and a record of 12-5.

The Lady Senators opened the contest with a flurry of big hits from Megan Blaylock, who recorded five kills, two blocks and an ace in the opening game. Walters State put together two five-point runs, with Taylor Sauerbrei recording an ace to give the Lady Senators a 12-6 lead.

The Lady Scots cut the lead to 16-15 on back-to-back aces by Daniqua Flack, but a kill from Kasey Morse followed by three more kills from Blaylock put Walters State on the brink of the win. Blaylock delivered an ace, winning the opening game, 25-19.

Maryville opened an early lead with a six-point run to grab a 7-3 advantage in the second game. The lead never dipped below two points the rest of the game, despite a run by the Lady Senators. Erika Waycaster served an ace to cut it to 16-14, but the Lady Scots closed the game on a 9-4 run to win it 25-18.

Walters State rebounded from their first set loss in eight games in resounding fashion in the third game. The Lady Senators raced out to an 8-2 lead on kills by Morse and Ashley Stanifer, while Blaylock added a pair of winners in the run.

Maryville kept it tight until Waycaster used her spinning jump serve to give Walters State seven straight points and a 22-10 lead. Waycaster had two aces in the run, and Grace Cunningham added a kill. Blaylock had a kill and Stanifer closed the game with two straight aces for a 25-13 win.

The Lady Scots bounced back to take a 6-2 lead in the fourth after two kills from Emily Ries, but a timeout called by the Lady Senators got them going. Blaylock blasted a pair of kills and helped serve Walters State back into the game, as they trailed 13-12.

Maryville scored three straight to extend the lead to 16-12, but the Lady Senators scored three straight of their own with Morse’s kill cutting the lead to 17-16. That put Walters State back on Waycaster’s serve, and she tied it at 17 with an ace. It was all Lady Scots after that, as Flack had two aces and Morgan Parker added two kills in an 8-2 run to win the game 25-19.

The Lady Senators opened the fifth game with a 3-0 run, as Maryville hit two long shots before Waycaster recorded yet another ace. The Lady Scots tied it at 3, but a Morse tip and an ace by Stanifer put Walters State back on top.

Maryville rebounded and took the lead 6-5, but a kill and an ace by Morse kept the seesaw action going. The Lady Senators finally built a 12-8 lead after kills from Blaylock and Waycaster, and they closed out the game after a kill by Morse and an ace from Stanifer for a 16-14 win.

Blaylock finished the night with 24 kills, while Morse added 15 kills and Stanifer had 11. Waycaster had 19 service points, including six aces, and added 32 assists, while Moriah McKinney had 19 digs. Blaylock and Morse both added four blocks in the match, and Stanifer had 16 service points.
