 September 30, 2012

By Nicholas Huenefeld/Owens Sports Information

Muskegon, MI---Juavanie Cole scored three goals to lead the Express men's soccer team to a 6-1 win over Muskegon Community College today.

The win gives the Express sole possession of second place in the Region XII standings, and they have a two game lead in the loss column on Muskegon, the third place team.

Glenroy Miller, who scored two goals and raised his season total to 16, opened the scoring for the Express in the 13th minute on an assist from Chris Kervick.

Cole then scored the next two goals in the 20th and 28th minute to put Owens up 3-0. Nickyle Webber and David Ortega-Gonzalez got the assists on those goals.

Miller then scored in the 44th minute on an assist from Troy Watson to put Owens up 4-0 at the end of the first half.

Muskegon's Kody Harrell put Muskegon on the board one and a half minutes into the second half to cut the Express lead to 4-1.

However, Cole answered in the 52nd minute with his third goal. Webber crossed the ball from the far left side of the goal and Cole headed it in.

Virgil Garcia scored his first goal of the season in the final minute to give the Express the final 6-1 margin. Vijay Gentles assisted on that goal.

Miller now has two 16 goal seasons with the Express. He is one of only seven players with at least 16 in a season, and he is one of only two to do it twice (Sean Bucknor). His 32 career goals puts him one off fourth place all-time in the program behind Fabio Cardoso's 33 in 2001-02.

Cole pushed his season goal total to four, while Webber's two assists increase his team-high total to nine. It is the 10th highest single season total in program history.

The Express are now 8-2-1 overall and 6-1-1 in Region XII. Muskegon falls to 8-4-0 overall and 6-3-0 in Region XII.

The next game for the Express will be Sunday at home against Lorain County Community College beginning at 1 p.m.
