San Jac's Stumpf, Banda selected in 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft
June 9, 2012HOUSTON – San Jacinto College pitchers Daniel Stumpf and Anthony Banda were selected earlier this week in the 2012 Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft. The Kansas City Royals, with the 283rd overall pick, selected Stumpf in the ninth round. He was a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Region XIV South Conference honoree, earned a spot on the Junior College (JUCO) World Series All-Tournament team, and was named the JUCO World Series most outstanding pitcher. The lefty from Humble (Atascocita HS) went 8-2 in the regular season with a 2.27 ERA, including a team-best 108 strikeouts in 111 innings pitched. With the 335th pick in the 10th round, the Milwaukee Brewers selected pitcher Anthony Banda. The left-handed freshman from Sinton (Sinton HS) went 7-1 in the regular season with a 2.01 ERA, including 73 strikeouts. San Jac finished the 2012 season as the national runner-up with an overall record of 41-25. In its 22nd appearance at the JUCO World Series, San Jacinto College advanced to the championship game for the 12th time in school history. It was the eighth runner-up title for the baseball team. Overall, 88 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) players were selected in this year’s draft. The NJCAA had 48 pitchers drafted from its ranks – 11 of which are left-handed – while 40 position players were selected.
