NJCAA Men's Basketball Players of the Week - Nov. 25, 2009

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Diante Watkins of Daley College (Ill.), Rico Sanders of Alabama Southern Community College, Hal Bateman of Des Moines Area Community College (Iowa) and Robbie Rives of Davidson County Community College (N.C.) have been named NJCAA Men's Basketball Players of the Week (Games Nov. 17-23).

DIVISION I

Rarely are there co-players of the week in any sport, but this week two players really stood out in Division I men's basketball in Daunte Watkins of Daley College and Rico Sanders of Alabama Southern Community College. The two share this week's the Division I POTW award.

Watkins, a 5'9" - 150 lbs. point guard from Chicago, Ill., scored 70 points in two games in leading Daley to two wins last week. His best performance was his 48 points scored against Kankakee in a 102-97 win on Nov. 21. He was 13-for-25 from the field, including 5-for-11 from three-point range, and also contributed two rebounds, six assists and three steals. He also scored 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting in a 60-54 win over Truman on Nov. 17. In that contest he also had three rebounds, six assists and two steals.










Sanders
, a 6'3" - 170 lbs. guard from College Park, Ga., poured in 92 points in three wins for Alabama Southern last week. On Nov. 17 he tallied 30 points with six rebounds and three assists in an 88-62 win over Bevill State. He then scored 22 points with four rebounds, two assists and two steals in a 95-89 win over Meridian on Nov. 19. His best game came on Nov. 21 when he netted 40 points with six rebounds and four assists in an 88-81 win over Gadsen State. For the week he shot 50 percent from the field (32-64), 43 percent from three-point land (19-44) and 69 percent from the free-throw line (9-13).









DIVISION II

Bateman, a 5'8" - 160 lbs. guard from Davenport, Iowa, helped DMACC to three wins on the week by shooting 86.4 percent (19-22) from the field. He scored a total of 58 points in the three victories with his best performance being a 33-point, 5-rebound output on Nov. 21 in a 73-64 victory over Illinois Central. He also scored 14 points to go with seven assists in an 83-65 win over Loras on Nov. 17 and chipped in 11 points in an 89-40 win over Grand View on Nov. 20.











DIVISION III

Davidson County's Robbie Rives, a 6'3" - 180 lbs. guard from Mt. Airy, N.C., scored over 20 points in back-to-back victories last week. On Nov. 21 he netted 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 3-for-6 on three-point attempts, to go with four rebounds, two steals and two assists in a 72-67 win over Tidewater. A day later he scored 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting with all six made field goals coming from behind the three-point line. He added two made free throws along with three rebounds, two assists and a steal in DCCC's 87-59 win over CCBC-Dundalk.
