Gulf Coast's Reese, Lackawanna's Ashton and Sandhills' Bostic Garner NJCAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week Honors
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jan. 7, 2009) - Brad Reese of Gulf Coast Community College (Fla.), Marcus Ashton of Lackawanna College (Pa.) and Germann Bostic of Sandhills Community College (N.C.) garner the first Player of the Week honors in NJCAA Division I, II and III Men's Basketball for 2009.
Reese, a 6'7" sophomore from Laurel Hill, Fla., powered Gulf Coast to three wins last week, culminating with an 86-82 upset of previously undefeated and No. 5 ranked Northwest Florida State on Jan. 3. A pair of 30-point performances served as bookends to Reese's week, one in which he averaged 22.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists. In his first game of the week, the pre-season All-American was 6-for-11 behind the three-point line and finished with 30 points in a win over Aiken Tech. On Jan. 3, his two free throws with 12 seconds left in the game capped another 30-point performance and sealed the Commodores' win in its conference opener.
Ashton, a 6'3" guard from Washington, D.C., scored 77 points in two games over the Christmas break for Lackawanna. In a four-point loss to Cecil (Md.) on Dec. 19 he scored 37 points on 14-of-30 shooting, including seven of 15 from three point range. Then on Dec. 20 in a eight-point loss to Monroe (N.Y.) he tallied 40 points on 15-of-27 shooting from the field (four of nine from three) and six of nine from the charity stripe.
Bostic, a 6'2" guard from Hamlet, N.C., stepped up for Sandhills head coach Aaron Denton with a big performance on Jan. 3 when the Flyers desperately needed it. With only seven players available for the contest, Bostic took the game in his hands by scoring 50 points in route to a 92-83 win over Johnston (N.C.). Bostic scored 35 points in the first half and didn't miss his first shot until after scoring his 27th point with 4:49 left in the half. He made his first seven shots from the field, six of which were three-pointers. He finished shooting 18-for-32 from the field, including nine for 13 from three-point range, and five of six from the free throw line. He also had nine rebounds and dished out two assists in the contest.
