Full slate of NJCAA Football games set for Week 2
 August 28, 2014

NJCAA Football Week 2 Preview

Following the slim schedule of 10 games on the docket in the first week of the 2014 NJCAA Football season, Week 2 is full with 58 of the nation’s 64 teams taking the field.

                              NJCAA Game of the Week

#13  Tyler (0-0)
  #4  Trinity Valley (0-0)
Saturday, 7:00 pm (CT)

The 2013 season saw the resurgence of two traditional powers in the Lone Star State as No. 4 Trinity Valley and No. 13 Tyler finished atop the SWJCFC standings. As both teams enter 2014 with high expectations, this season-opener could have major conference implications later on down the road.

Despite coming off their first nine-win season since 2003, Tyler will need to reload for 2014 with just four starters coming back from last year’s squad. With limited experience offensively, the Apaches will look for leadership from sophomore offensive linemen Sam Jenkins and Idong Okon. On the defensive line, sophomores Colton Morehead and Mote Maile should provide Tyler with a strong presence up front. Morehead compiled 49 tackles, 1.5 sacks and forced three fumbles as a freshman from the end. From the defensive tackle spot, Maile recorded 30 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 2013.

Entering the 2014 season with national championship aspirations, Trinity Valley will rely on their experience to get past the Apaches in the season-opener. The Cardinals return 15 starters for 2014, including wide receiver Jarvis Baxter who caught 49 passes for 751 yards and eight touchdowns last season. Sophomore running back Luis Lopez should be in for another successful season with Deandre Banks and Reggie Harris back on the offensive line. Trinity Valley’s eight returning starters on defense – led by middle linebacker Cortney Finney – will look to improve in 2014 after struggling in crucial games last year.

Other Key Games in Week 2

#19  Itawamba (0-0)
  #3  Copiah-Lincoln (0-0)
Thursday, 6:30 pm (CT)

Two cross-division foes with MACJC title hopes clash Thursday as No. 3 Copiah-Lincoln hosts No. 19 Itawamba. With the return of sophomore quarterback Daniel Fitzwater (right, #15), the Wolves enter the 2014 season with some of the highest expectations in Copiah-Lincoln history after falling one game short of the conference playoffs last year. With just five returning starters on offense, Itawamba may be relying on its seven returning defensive starters to anchor this year’s squad.

#12  Arizona Western (1-0)
#16  Scottsdale (0-0)
Saturday, 7:00 pm (PT)

After cruising to a 45-10 win over New Mexico Military last week, No. 12 Arizona Western enters stage two of their three-week gauntlet at defending WSFL champion No. 16 Scottsdale. The Matadors’ season-opener was highlighted by the 223 rushing yards compiled by running backs Demi Ayoola and Darrell Monroe (right, #32). With the departure of record-setting quarterback Blake Decker, expect the Scottsdale Artichokes to turn to sophomore running back Za’Quan Summers who rushed for 1,070 yards and 10 touchdowns as a freshman.

       Coffeyville (0-0)
 #2  Iowa Western (0-0)
Saturday, 1:00 pm (CT)

The new series between the KJCCC and ICCAC kicks off this week as a historic dynasty is pitted against a rising power. No. 2 Iowa Western enters Saturday’s game against Coffeyville looking to take their first step towards third second national title in three years. The Reivers return nine starters from last season, including five on offense. Meanwhile, the multitude of new faces at Coffeyville are looking to bring the Red Ravens back to prominence after failing to reach the eight-win benchmark since 2005.
