Rock Valley men ride second-half comeback to first DIII Basketball title

LOCH SHELDRAKE, N.Y. – Rock Valley (Ill.) won their first men’s basketball national championship Saturday with a 79-69 win over Caldwell Tech (N.C.) in the Division III title game.

Despite trailing by eight at the break, the Golden Eagles outscored Caldwell Tech 55-37 in the second half on their way to victory. The second-half performance was led by freshmen Jared Mayes and L.T. Davis who each posted 16 points in the final 20 minutes of play.

Mayes led all scorers with 28 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field. The forward also recorded five rebounds and knocked down 9-of-14 free throw attempts. Davis dished out five assists and his 21-point scoring effort was highlighted by five 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Brandt Voiles was Rock Valley’s unsung hero, totaling a team-high eight rebounds and a game-high six assists.

The Golden Eagles’ run to the championship began in Thursday’s quarterfinals with an 83-72 win over Nassau (N.Y.). In the semifinals, Rock Valley took down defending national championship Brookdale (N.J.) with an 80-59 victory,

Closing out their 2013-14 campaign with six-consecutive wins, Rock Valley’s championship run was highlighted by a 30-5 record. Entering Saturday’s championship
game on a nine-game win streak, Caldwell Tech dropped to 29-7 following the defeat.
