CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. – The Trailblazers of Vincennes University (Ind.) closed out the 2012-13 NJCAA sports season by claiming the national title in Division III men’s golf Friday afternoon on the Lake Course at the Chautauqua Golf Course. VU topped the team leader board with a three-round total of 910 (+46), which was four strokes better than national runner-up Sandhills Community College (N.C.). Host Jamestown Community College (N.Y.) came in third overall with a 915 (+51) team score.

The tournament was scheduled to be a four-round event, but rain forced tournament officials to cancel the event’s third round on Thursday.

The national championship is the first in men’s golf for Vincennes and marks the first title for a team from Region 12 since 2003 (Columbus State CC, Ohio). Four Trailblazers carded top 20 performances. Shelby Stewart and Tyler Sloan tied for 11th overall with a 12-over-par 228. Trevor Grant finished in a tie for 14th place with a 229 (+13) while Jackson Cowden rallied in the final round with a 75 (+3) to finish tied for 18th at 230 (+14).

Ethan Chamineak of Georgia Military College took home medalist honors by turning an even-par 216 for the three rounds. After shooting an opening round 70 (-2), Chamineak carded a 73 (+1) in both the second and final rounds. He is the second golfer from GMC to win the DIII individual title since the division was launched in 1990 (Brendan O’Connell – 2004).

Aaron Rondon of Southwest Wisconsin Technical College was the national runner-up with a 217 (+1). Suffolk Community College’s (N.Y.) Darren McCormack came in third overall, turning in a 222 (+6).
