The top eight teams from NJCAA Division III Men’s Tennis are in Plano, Texas this week for the NJCAA Championship. Three-time defending national champions Gloucester County College opened their title defense by winning all eight of their opening round matches on Monday. The Roadrunners will face stiff competition this week from both Nassau CC (NY) and Bergen CC (NJ) for the team title.

The #1 singles flight had some of the strongest competition in years. Top seeded Maclane Smoke (Brookdale CC) opened his tournament Monday with a 6-0, 6-1 win over John Chammat (CC Rhode Island). #2 seed Pasha Shapouri defeated Christian Barnes from Onondaga CC 6-0, 6-1 as well. The best match in the #1 singles flight came as Gloucester's Donovan Vassalotti defeated Gustavo Linde (Oxford College) 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 in a three hour thriller. The lone upset of the day came as Gloucester’s Mike Perrone defeated #2 seed Alex Day from Oxford College 6-0, 6-0 at #2 singles.

Wednesday will feature the semifinal round matches in all nine flights. Gloucester currently has the points lead but a lot could change after Wednesday’s matches. Gloucester and Nassau CC will both be represented in all nine semifinal flights. Bergen CC will play in 8 of the semifinal flights.
