From Wabash Valley College Athletics

NJCAA Hall of Fame basketball coach Dan Sparks will retire from Wabash Valley College (Ill.) on May 15, 2013 after seven years at the institution where he guided the men's basketball program to 163 wins.

In 42 years of coaching, Sparks has won 868 games and led 15 teams to the NJCAA Men's Basketball Championship tournament in Hutchinson, Kan. Two of those appearances were with Wabash Valley in 2011 and 2012. He previously spent 27 seasons as the head coach at Vincennes University (Ind.) where he led the Trailblazers to 13 appearances in Hutchinson, including a national runner-up finish in 1986. He also starred at Vincennes and was a member of the Trailblazers' 1965 national championship team.

Sparks was inducted into the NJCAA Men's Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2000 and from 1999-2004 was a member of the USA Basketball committee from 1999-2004 and  president of the NJCAA Men's Basketball Coaches Association. He coached 245 NJCAA All-Americans and 27 of his players went on to play professional basketball. Even more impressive, 33 former players coached by Sparks are currently coaching men's basketball.
