OC Sports Softball Players of the Week: Feb. 25 - March 3
March 6, 2013COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Casey Hargett (Pitt CC, N.C.), Ollivia McLemore (Gulf Coast State, Fla.), Kyleigh Hanson (Mesa CC, Ariz.) and Samantha Buller (Jones County JC, Miss.) have been named OC Sports NJCAA softball players of the week for games Feb. 25 – March 3.
The Bulldogs improved their record this season to 11-1 last week, winning six games behind Hargett’s leadership at the plate. Batting for a .692 average (9-for-13), Hargett hit three doubles and a home run while driving in 12 runs. The freshman was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate in a 19-2 blowout of Patrick Henry CC (Va.), recording seven RBIs and coming up a triple short of hitting for the cycle. Hargett has a team-high 14 RBIs in 2013 to go along with a .550 batting average. Pitching back-to-back shutouts against Wallace CC-Dothan (Ala.), McLemore notched two wins last week for the Commodores. In her first outing against the Governors, McLemore had seven strikeouts and gave up only three hits in seven innings as Gulf Coast State won, 6-0. In Sunday’s 9-0 victory, the sophomore was one fielding error short of pitching five perfect innings.
Splitting back-to-back two-game series with Scottsdale CC (Ariz.) and Division I No. 16 Yavapai College (Ariz.), the Thunderbirds benefitted from Hanson’s offensive efforts. The freshman was 7-for-13 batting for a .539 average, hitting a triple and recording two RBIs. In an 8-2 win over Scottsdale, Hanson was 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and two steals. Hanson’s 33 hits and .458 batting average in 2013 are both team-highs for Mesa. The No. 7 Bobcats picked up a 5-1 road win over Itawamba CC (Miss.) last week behind Buller’s seven strong innings. Buller recorded nine strikeouts in seven innings, giving up one run on only two hits. Claiming her second win of the season, Buller now boasts a 0.88 ERA in 16 innings of work.
