OC Sports Baseball Players of the Week: Feb. 18-24
February 27, 2013COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Jacob Mena (Western Texas College), Miles Gully (Western Texas College), Michael Gilbert (Mississippi Gulf Coast CC), Domenick Carlini (Northwest Mississippi CC) and Cody Stashak (Cumberland CC, N.J.) have been named OC Sports NJCAA baseball players of the week for games Feb. 18-24.
The Westerners went 3-1 last week behind Mena’s stellar play at the plate. Going up against Ranger College (Texas) in all four games, Mena was 8-for-12 batting for a .667 average. The freshman hit one home run and totaled five RBIs and five runs scored for the week. So far this season, Mena leads the Westerners with a .414 batting average and has compiled seven RBIs. Gully’s gem against Ranger College (Texas) led the Westerners to a 3-0 victory. The sophomore allowed only three hits in his seven-inning shutout. Gully also struck out three hitters in the effort. In three games this season, Gully has a 1-0 record with a team-leading 3.86 ERA.
Leading the Bulldogs to a 3-1 record, Gilbert enjoyed an outstanding week at the plate. Batting for a .545 average, the sophomore was 6-for-11 at the plate with two doubles and two home runs. Gilbert batted in five runs while scoring six of his own. Showing his eye at the plate, Gilbert also drew five walks on the week. Gilbert has been the No. 15 Bulldogs’ top hitter so far in 2013, boasting a .469 batting while leading the team with 15 hits and 13 RBIs.
In the Rangers’ 8-3 victory over Southwest Tennessee CC, Carlini delivered seven solid innings of work to claim the win. The freshman earned 12 of his 21 outs via strikeout, while giving up only two runs off six hits in the outing. Carlini’s win against Southwest Tennessee is his only appearance thus far in 2013.
The Dukes jumped out to a 3-1 record to start 2013, thanks in part to Stashak’s offensive effort. Batting for a .545 average (6-for-11), Stashak recorded two doubles and a triple on the week. The freshman also brought home seven runs and scored seven of his own. Stashak’s .545 batting average and seven RBIs this season leads the Dukes.
