Gloucester Runs Away with 2012 NJCAA DIII Women's Tennis Title on Tournament's Final Day
October 26, 2012
The Gloucester County College (N.J.) Lady Roadrunners secured the 2012 NJCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship by taking five championship matches as part of “Finals Friday” at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y. Playing in the shadows of Arthur Ashe Stadium, three Roadrunners took home singles division prizes, while two doubles teams provided insurance points in the afternoon session. Leading the way for Brian Rowan’s squad was Terra McHenry, Tori Yeich, and Kelly Stanton in singles play, while Jessica Barney provided a needed spark in the No. 3 doubles competition. McHenry ousted Ocean County College’s (N.J.) Allison Dennis in No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3. Yeich and Stanton downed Ocean’s Emily Gaydos (6-2, 6-3) and Mercer’s Kelly Tanzone (7-5, 6-1) to win the fourth and fifth singles flights respectively. Farrah Smoke from Brookdale Community College (N.J.), who was one of many returning players to the tournament, earned the No. 1 singles championship by defeating Rock Valley College’s (Ill.) Nicole Beck, 6-2, 6-1. Ocean’s AnnMarie Wodell held off Fashion Institute of Technology’s (N.Y.) Keerthana Sivaramakrishnan, 6-4, 6-4, to take home the No. 2 singles championship. However, fellow Fashion Institute teammate, Ashley Yakaboski won the sixth singles flight by downing Broome Community College’s (N.Y.) Bryce Farrell, 6-1, 6-3. McHenry teamed up with Yeich, while Barney paired with Stanton, and gave Gloucester titles in the second and third doubles flights. The team of Nicole Beck and April Weisheit dispatched Emily Denney and Ali Krowiak from Broome, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles title match. In all, over 140 matches were played over a three-day period at the prestigious venue. When the dust settled, Gloucester tallied 31 team points, which was four better than Fashion Institute of Technology (27). The following is a more detailed glance at the final points standings:
