October 3, 2012COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Lucina Gonzalez (Prairie State College, Ill.), Sam McCurley (Otero JC, Colo.), Marbewl Santana (Brookhaven College, Texas) and Kelli Thielen (Rochester CTC, Minn.) have been named NJCAA Women’s Soccer Players of the Week for matches Sept. 24-30.
Player of the Week for Division I went to Gonzalez, while McCurley earned Goalie of the Week. Santana was pegged as the Division III Player of the Week and Thielen took the division’s goalie honors.
Gonzalez was responsible for all 10 of her team’s goals last week, leading Prairie State to three victories. The freshman scored four goals for the Pioneers in their 4-0 win over Harper College (Ill.) and tallied another four in a 4-3 victory against Elgin CC (Ill.). Against Joliet JC (Ill.), Gonzalez put another two goals past the goalie in a forfeited victory. The Pioneers and Gonzalez will travel to No. 18 College of Lake County (Ill.) Wednesday for their lone game of the week. The Rattlers picked up two victories last week behind 180 minutes of shutout play from McCurley. In a 3-0 win over Western Nebraska CC, the freshman recorded saves on all three shots at her goal. McCurley then denied all four shots taken by No. 9 Laramie County CC (Wyo.) in Otero’s 2-0 victory. Before hosting two matches this weekend, McCurley and the No. 11 Rattlers will play at Dodge City CC (Kan.) Wednesday.
The Bears had few threats against their goal last week as Santana continually disrupted the opposition’s attack. Hosting No. 10 Richland College (Texas), the sophomore led the Bears’ defense to giving up only three shots on goal in a 1-0 victory. In an 8-0 shutout of Eastfield College (Texas), Santana gave up only one shot on goal and scored her first goal of the season. In their lone match of the week, Santana and the No. 7 Bears host Mountain View College (Texas) Friday.
Thielen was kept busy by opposing offenses last week but successfully protected her goal as the Yellowjackets notched three wins. In victories over Dakota County TC (Minn.), Mayo College and Harper College (Ill.), Thielen completed 270 minutes of shutout play. The sophomore totaled 23 saves on the week, improving her record to 8-4-1. Thielen will look to continue her streak Saturday when No. 10 Rochester plays host to Bismarck State College (N.D.).
