NJCAA Women's Soccer Players of the Week - Sept. 19, 2012
September 19, 2012COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Danielle Sheehy (Hutchinson CC, Kan.), Eunice Figueroa (Hutchinson CC, Kan.), Chloe Donegan (Oxford of Emory, Ga.) and Cristina Lopez (Brookhaven College, Texas) have been named NJCAA Women’s Soccer Players of the Week for matches Sept. 10-16. In Division I, Hutchinson took both awards with Sheehy earning Player of the Week for the second time in 2012 and Figueroa claiming goalie honors. Donegan clinched Division III Player of the Week, while Lopez was again tabbed DIII Goalie of the Week.
Sheehy enjoyed an offensive explosion last week, leading the top-ranked Blue Dragons to three wins. The freshman recorded two hat-tricks with three goals against Hesston College (Kan.) and Pratt CC (Kan.). Sheehy also delivered two goals in a 3-2 win over No. 19 Johnson County CC (Kan.). Capping off the week with 18 points, Sheehy will look for her success to carry over to this week when the No. 1 Blue Dragons go to Allen County CC (Kan.) Saturday.
The Blue Dragons were undefeated last week, thanks in part to three strong efforts from Figueroa. The sophomore shutout Hesston College (Kan.) and Pratt CC (Kan.) in 135 minutes of goalkeeping. Despite giving up two goals to No. 19 Johnson County CC (Kan.), Figueroa tightened up down the stretch to preserve Hutchinson’s 3-2 lead. At 5-0 this season, Figueroa will need another top-notch effort Saturday when the No. 1 Blue Dragons head to Allen County CC (Kan.).
The Eagles’ success last week was dependent on the production of Donegan. In Oxford’s two victories, Donegan totaled five goals for 10 points. Against Abraham Baldwin AC (Ga.), the freshman was shut down and the Eagles found themselves on the wrong end of a 5-0 blowout. Looking to shake off the loss, Donegan and Oxford travel to South Georgia College Friday.
For the third consecutive week, Lopez earned Goalie of the Week honors. Maintaining their perfect record, the Bears went 2-0 on the week behind the impenetrable freshman. Lopez stopped all six shots at her goal in a 7-0 victory against Eastfield College (Texas). Despite giving up her first goal of the season to Paris JC (Texas), Lopez stepped up her play and anchored Brookhaven to a 2-1 win. Friday, Lopez and the No. 7 Bears will head to North Lake College (Texas).
