Lady Bobcats claim four victories in NJCAA Tennis Tournament

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats had a good opening round in the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Tournament here Sunday at the Reffkin Tennis Center. The Lady Bobcats won four matches and are tied for 12th in the nation with 8 points after the first round of play. Sophomore Tiffany Hudson (Wayne Academy) and freshman Samantha Dickerson (George County) claimed victories in singles' play, while the No. 2 doubles' team of Hudson and sophomore Rebecca Rogers (Oak Grove), along with the No. 3 doubles' team of sophomore Jillian McNeese (Laurel) and freshman Arlette Cochran (George County) also won their first-round matches. The tournament will continue through Friday. Hudson won her first-round match in No. 3 singles over Luiza Alekssiejcyk of Elgin Community College (Ill.), 6-0, 4-6, 6-2. Hudson will face Brittany Johnson of Kalamazoo Valley Community College (Mich.) in the second round at 1 p.m. (Central Time) on Monday. In No. 6 singles, Dickerson beat Lindy Kowalchuk of Seward County Community College (Kan.), 6-4, 6-1. Dickerson will face Indi Mire of Meridian Community College in the second round at 2:30 p.m. on Monday. In No. 2 doubles, Hudson and Rogers teamed to defeat Antigone Lowery and Sylvia Perez of Seward County, 6-4, 6-1. They will face Fatma Kuzu and Taylor Holzknecht of Collin County Community College (Texas) at 5 p.m. on Monday. In No. 3 doubles, Cochran and McNeese beat Melinda Scott and Kaitlyn Bell of Snead State, 6-4, 6-2. They will face Ashley Boender and Caitlin Rutledge of Kalamazoo Valley CC at 5:30 p.m. on Monday in round two. In other first-round play on Sunday, sophomore Mary Carole Kiewit (Laurel) fell to Fanny Benincasa of Seward County, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 1 singles. Kiewit meets Ashlea Baker of Temple College (Texas) at 9:30 a.m. on Monday in the consolation round. In No. 2 singles, sophomore Meredith Johnson (Northeast Jones) dropped a 6-0, 6-2, decision to Tracy Cooper of Johnson County Community College (Kan.). Johnson will play Jennifer Black of Snead State Community College (Ala.) at 9:30 a.m. on Monday in consolation action. In No. 4 singles, Rogers lost to Megan Joyce of Elgin CC, 6-4, 6-4. Rogers faces the winner of Monday's match between Jessica Halterman of Meridian CC and Rachel Clarke of Eastern Arizona College at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday in consolation action. In No. 5 singles, freshman Arlette Cochran (George County) lost to Simona Mrazova of the Institute of American Student Achievement (N.Y.), 6-4, 6-1. Cochran meets Brinlee Goodman of Eastern Arizona College at 9:30 a.m. on Monday in consolation action. In No. 1 doubles, Kiewit and Johnson lost to Gabriela Rodriguez and Mary Croswell of Pima Community College (Ariz.), 7-6 (6), 6-3. Kiewit and Johnson will play Lindy Winter and Chelsey Lentini of Jacksonville Community College (Fla.) at 5:30 p.m. on Monday in consolation action. |
