NJCAA Softball Players of the Week - April 28, 2010April 27, 2010
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The NJCAA Softball Players of the Week have been selected. The Division 1 Player of the Week is Kaylee Garrett of Walters State Community College (Tenn.) and the Pitcher of the Week is Kristen Skinner from Wallace State Community College-Hanceville (Ala.). The Division 2 Player of the Week is Bailey Herron of Danville Area Community College (Ill.) and the Pitcher of the Week is Stephanie Romano from County College of Morris (N.J.).
Garrett had great week at the plate for the Senators hitting .588 (10-17) with nine runs, one double, six home runs, 15 RBI's and one walk.
On April 20, in two wins over Roane State, Garrett went 5-for-8 with six runs, four home runs, eight RBI's and one walk.
On April 22, in a double header split with Volunteer State, the sophomore went 5-for-8 with three runs, one double, two home runs, and seven RBI's.
Garrett has hit a home run in four straight games and leads the team with 15 home runs this season.
Skinner is the Division 1 Pitcher of the Week after a week where she gave up four earned runs on 12 hits through 26 innings with seven walks and 28 strikeouts.
On April 21, in a win over Northwest Shoals, Skinner gave up three earned runs on eight hits through seven innings with two walks and four strikeouts.
The next day, against Gadsden State, she gave up one earned run on three hits through seven innings with three walks and six strikeouts.
On April 23, in a 9-0 win over Snead State, the sophomore threw a no-hit shutout in five innings with one walk and nine strikeouts.
Two days later she was at it again, in a 5-0 win over Columbia State, going seven innings giving up no runs on one hit with one walk and nine strikeouts. Skinner finishes the regular season with a 15-6 record and an ERA of 1.26 with 136 strikeouts.
Herron had as close to a perfect week as anyone could get for Danville Area Community College, hitting an amazing .933 (14-15) with seven runs, two doubles, one triple, 12 RBI's and three walks.
On April 20, in two wins over Spoon River, Herron went 3-for-4 with two runs, one double, two RBI's and one walk.
Two days later, in two wins over Springfield College, the sophomore went 5-for-5 with three runs, one double, three RBI's, and one walk.
On April 24, in two more wins over Springfield College, Herron went 6-for-6 with two runs, one triple, one home run, seven RBI's, and one walk. This season, Herron is second on the team with a .450 average.
Romano is the Division 2 Pitcher of the Week for a week that saw her give up just one earned run on eight hits through 24 innings of work with seven walks and 30 strikeouts.
On April 20, against Div. 3 #10 Northampton, Romano won a true pitcher's duel giving up just one run on one hit through eight innings with five walks and eight strikeouts.
Two days later, against Lehigh Carbon CC, the sophomore gave up one run (unearned) on one hit through six innings with one walk and 12 strikeouts.
On April 24, in two wins over Briarcliffe College of Long Island (four-year school), Romano gave up one run (unearned) on six hits through 10 innings with one walk and ten strikeouts. In game one, Romano made the start and in game two she came in relief in the fourth inning. Romano has an 18-5 record this season.
