Academic Teams of the Year revealed for 2016-17

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The NJCAA recognized the top academic programs for the 2016-17 season Monday with the reveal of the association’s annual Academic Teams of the Year.

A total of 25 teams – 12 men’s and 13 women’s – were honored for accumulating the highest GPA in their respective sport while meeting the minimum 3.0 requirement.

Several programs earned top honors for consecutive seasons. The baseball program for Daytona State (FL) led the nation with a 3.70 average to take home the title for the 11th straight year. The Falcons have owned the top academic team award in NJCAA baseball since the 2006-07 season.  

The wrestling program at Pratt (KS) posted the highest GPA – 3.23 – to win the top honor for the sixth consecutive season, while Daytona State’s women’s golf team took home its fourth straight honor after posting a 3.89 average – the highest mark of any team for 2016-17.

In women’s bowling, Suffolk County (NY) achieved the highest GPA for the third year in a row with a 3.49. Other repeat academic champion programs include Southwest Mississippi’s men’s basketball program, Lansing (MI) for men’s outdoor track & field and Snead State (AL) in women’s tennis.

Daytona State, Fashion Institute of Technology (NY) and Kaskaskia (IL) were the only colleges to have multiple teams take home honors - all claiming two titles.

A record number of programs earned honorable mention recognition by meeting the award requirements. A total of 740 teams posted a 3.0 GPA or higher, breaking the previous record of 687 set last year.

About the NJCAA Academic Team Awards
Since 1993, the NJCAA has recognized the team with the highest overall grade-point average for their sport and gender with the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year Award. Teams that qualify with an overall grade-point average of at least a 3.0 are receive honorable mention recognition. Nominations are submitted by each team’s respective institution.
