Lamar State College-Port Arthur to add volleyball for 2014 season
November 25, 2013

Ten years after adding its first-ever sports programs, Lamar State College-Port Arthur is announcing the start of a volleyball program for the Fall 2014 season.

LSC-PA added basketball and softball in 2004 and with the advent of the 2014 season, the Seahawks will proudly add a volleyball program to its roster of sports teams.

“We are very excited to start a volleyball program at Lamar State College-Port Arthur,” said Scott Street, athletic director. “Volleyball is very important to the Golden Triangle and I believe it will be very popular at the college. Especially important is the fact that this gives students an additional opportunity to continue their education while doing something they love.”

The school’s first volleyball coach will be decided upon in the next 4 to 6 weeks with candidates already responding to the nationally-advertised position. The hire is expected to be made by early January 2014.

“The first priority for a new coach will be recruiting and scheduling for the fall,” Street explained.

Southeast Texas has long been a stronghold of high school volleyball talent and the addition of a collegiate program at LSC-PA will give area students the opportunity to advance to the next level of play right here at home.

“This area is known for its volleyball talent,” LSC-PA President Dr. Sam Monroe said. “I am looking forward to seeing how this program will impact students and their families not only here in Southeast Texas but from across the nation.”

The volleyball program will immediately compete in the NJCAA Division I, Region XIV. The Seahawks will be challenged right away, with Blinn Junior College and Tyler Junior College, both Region XIV teams, ranked No. 1 and 2 nationally in the NJCAA this season.

“The competition is strong in Region XIV no matter the sport you’re talking about,” Street said. “But I feel confident we will be able to compete right away.”

Even as LSC-PA continues its efforts to bring new dorms to the campus, the college is working to improve on-campus life for students who are finding more and more reasons to stay after class.

“Volleyball will be just one more thing that helps improve life on campus for our students,” Dr. Monroe said. “We have theater events, special speakers, live concerts and sporting events throughout the year. That fact, along with the great number of academic and technical programs we offer, means that we continue to thrive and expand every semester.”
