SLCC Director of Athletics Norma Carr to receive Pioneer of Progress Award
July 17, 2013

SLCC Director of Athletics Norma Carr to receive Pioneer of Progress Award

Salt Lake City, UT—The SLCC Athletic Department announced officially on Monday that Director of Athletics Norma Carr will receive a Days of '47/Workers Compensation Fund Pioneers of Progress Award on Tuesday, July 16.

Carr will accept the award along with five other Utahns at a reception and dinner at the Little America Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City. The awards are given as part of the annual celebration of Utah's pioneer heritage by the Days of '47 Board of Directors.

The purpose of the award is to honor modern-day Utahns who perpetuate a legacy of industry and integrity. The tradition of granting these awards began in 1995, and recognizes outstanding individuals whose work benefits both present and future generations.

Carr is a descendant of Utah pioneers Anson Call and Annie Call Carr and has spent her life dedicated to empowering athletes, particularly women in sports. A champion of the Title IX initiative for women in athletics, Norma was Utah's first ever female athletic director to oversee both men's and women's sports.

Under Carr's leadership, Salt Lake Community College has risen to field five perennially competitive programs at the national level. She has overseen the construction of the state-of-the-art Lifetime Activities Center, Bruin Baseball's Cate Field and the home of national powerhouse SLCC Softball team Bruin Field.

Carr was the only woman named as one of the 25 Most Influential People in Utah Sports back in 2004 and was named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Administrator of the Year. She was inducted into the University of Utah's Crimson Club Hall of Fame last year.

The SLCC Athletic Department congratulates you, Director Carr, on your latest award and thanks you for your unending hard work and dedication!
