Sharks Baseball Falls in National Title game; Claim NJCAA Runners-up & FCSAA State Champions
June 3, 2014

The Miami Dade College Sharks left many teams in their wake in pursuit of a national title, but were unable to overcome red-hot Iowa Western, falling 17-5 in the championship game of the NCJAA JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

The journey to the World Series began after the Sharks won the FCSAA Region 8 State Championship, wrapping their regular season with a 17-6 Southern Conference record (35-15 overall).

Battling through a tough bracket, the Sharks beat some of the nation’s best to earn a shot at the title. The first match up was against No.5 Spartanburg Methodist, where the Sharks won 8-3 with sophomore Kyle Carter on the mound. Next they faced Blinn College, run-ruling the Texas team 11-2. Then, the team took its first hit in a 10-0 shutout loss to the eventual champions, Iowa Western. Showing resilience, the Sharks shrugged off the loss and bounced back to run-rule Spartan Methodist 13-2, beating the team for the second time. With the title in the balance, the team lost 17-6 to Iowa Western, the only undefeated team remaining in the championship.

For the team, the loss is a disappointment. However, as the 2014 runner-up, the team now ranks among the nation’s elite. Along the way, the Sharks made friends, wowed new fans, got the chance to see snow and earned many accolades. Three players made the NJCAA JUCO World Series All-Tournament team: Freshman Darren Seferina, who closed the tournament batting .600 with nine hits and four RBIs; sophomore Kyle Carter, who pitched 13 innings with 10 strikeouts; and sophomore Nick Bateman, who batted .583 with seven hits, a double, a triple, three homeruns and four RBIs.
