Benninger Paces Kish as Wiley Breaks Record
November 11, 2009
Stephanie Benninger led all scorers with 21 points as Kishwaukee beat Rock Valley 91-79. The win places head coach Karen Wiley at the top of the list when it comes to the program's wins, and the first coach to ever reach 100 wins in the program. Among some of Wiley's accomplishments include: 3 NJCAA All-Americans, 2 WBCA All-Americans, 6 NJCAA Academic-All-Americans, 3 Region IV MVP's, 9 First Team All-Region IV, 8 Second Team All-Region IV, 3 Arrowhead Conference MVP's, and 22 Arrowhead All-Conference Selections, not to mention an appearance on the NJCAA 2008-09 Academic Team of the Year listing and continued national recognition from the WBCA with Kishwaukee's team G.P.A. and donations for Think Pink. But all of these doesn't mean as much as the lives she has touched.
What is important to Coach Wiley isn't the wins, awards, or recognition, those things are nice, but don't last. What she cares about is the success in life and where her athletes end up after they leave Kish. With a 98% graduation rate, she has doctors, lawyers, teachers, counselors, and coaches all representing the program. She has created much more than a program, but a family and tradition of excellence. It is the phone calls and e-mails updating her on life and success, the wedding invitations and baby showers that touch a special place in her heart. "Being recognized tonight was a very special honor, but seeing all the alumni and their families in the stands meant more than words could explain." Wiley adds of the surprise ceremony after the win.
The Kougars are back in action Saturday as they take on Waubonsee for a Region IV match-up.
