GCC Golf Team Has Runner - Up Finish in Regionals, Advances to Nationals - Places Four Players on All Region Team - Coach Tom Tucker Named region III Golf Coach of the Year
May 22, 2011

The GCC Golf team headed to the Region III Golf Tournament  in Cortland NY at the Cortland Country Club on May 16th and 17th not really sure about what to expect.  They qualified with a little less strain than 2010, their first year of competition for the renewed GCC sport, but there were a lot of question marks.

They were confident, but wary of Onondaga CC, who was .75 of a point behind them in team scoring average for the season at third place.  GCC was coming off an upset tournament victory over Monroe CC on May 8th  at the MCC Invitational, so they had high expectations.

Those expectations materialized with an invite to Nationals as the team performed at a level that no one really could have predicted.

In the two day aggregate tournament where four scores count from five players for the team event, and individual scores are also tallied, the teams from the nine schools that qualified for Regionals that finish first and second are invited to Nationals, and the top 5 individual low scores - not including scores from the first and second place teams - also make the trip.

On Day one, which was played in very wet and rainy conditions after a four hour delay, GCC’s Kyle Harman, a transfer student from Erie CC who won Regionals in 2010, took the individual lead with a 72.

It was a personal best score for Harman for tournament play.

GCC also positioned themselves in second place as a team, shooting 311, behind MCC (302), and one stroke ahead of Onondaga CC (312).

Day two’s play got started as scheduled at 9am under wet conditions with light rain throughout the day.

Harman stumbled a bit to a 78, but every other player on GCC’s team shot personal best tournament scores!  Corey Kocent and Mark DeCook each shot even par 72’s, Matt Ferdinand shot a 73, and Alex Muench shot 79, for a team total score of 295 for the day, tops in the field followed by MCC (298) and Onondaga CC .  The 295 score blew away the GCC team previous best tournament score of 309 in 2010.

GCC also placed four players on the 2011 All Region Team as Harman, Ferdinand, Kocent, and DeCook each earned the honor.

Two day totals for the competing teams were:

302  298  600 MONROE CC

311  295  606 GENESEE CC

312  308  620 ONONDAGA CC

328  316  644 NIAGARA CCC

332  315  647 JAMESTOWN CC

333  324  657 MOHAWK VALLEY CC

351  336  687 BROOME CC

334  358  692  CAYUGA CC

Medalist for the event was MCC’s Shane Dobesh with a two day total of 148. GCC’s Matt Ferdinand and Kyle Harman joined Onondaga CC’s Alec Stoianoff and MCC’s Anthony Colosi in a four way tie for second place at 150.

The GCC team will be competing in NJCAA Division III Nationals at the Chautauqua GC, Chautauqua NY on June 6 through 10.

GCC Head Golf Coach Tom Tucker was also named Region III Coach of The Year

For the third time in five years the Cougar Baseball Team won the Western New York Athletic Conference Championship. In game one on Saturday, the Cougars defeated Jamestown Community College 3-0. The team was led by pitcher Greg Rapp who threw a one hitter in all nine innings while striking out five and walking three. Nate Smith and Adam Grace each had two hits to lead the offense.

In the championship game later that day, Genesee defeated Niagara County Community College 7-1 to win the WNYAC championship. The Cougars took the early lead scoring in the second inning. John Broll led the inning off with a walk and then scored off a single by Jacob Featherstone. NCCC came back to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning but Genesee was determined to battle back as they continued to score throughout the game to make the score 7-1. Adam Grace led the team in offense going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI's. Genesee starting pitcher Shaun Slemko pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up two hits while walking one. Dan Sharpe entered the game and got the win pitching the rest of the way striking out four and walking one.

The team finished its Conference fall season with an impressive 11-3 record. Coach Sherman says, "I could not be more proud of this team. They have worked very hard and this a well deserved championship for this group of players."

The All Conference players should be announced in the next couple of weeks and the team will then begin getting prepared for a competitive spring season.

Lady Cougars Remain Undefeated in NJCAA Region III Division III
October 4, 2010

The GCC Women's Soccer team (10-1-1) won against Tompkins-Cortland Community College (8-3-1) today to win their second game during Homecoming Weekend with a score of 2-1. TC3 scored late in the first half to take the lead off a goal from Kendra Wagstaff assisted by Kayli Vancleef. At the end of regulation the score remained tied as both teams prepared for the overtime ahead.

Late into the 2nd ten minute overtime with just 3:40 left, freshman midfielder Cady Hume (Batavia, NY) headed the game winning goal into the net off a corner from Freshman Brittany Luckey (Leroy, NY). Mollie Culmone played in goal for the Lady Cougars and registered 7 saves as GCC outshot TC3 22-8.

No. 15 Genesee Men's Soccer Upset No. 8 Mohawk Valley Community College
September 20, 2010

GCC men's soccer continued their impressive run picking up their fifth win in a row. This time they took down Mohawk Valley, who is currently ranked 8th in the NJCAA national poll, in a tightly contested battle. Mohawk Valley applied early pressure but the Cougars defense, led by Jeremy Voigt, was more than up to the test. Andy Hagen, Djibril Gueye and Kaleo Almeida all performed at the top of their game helping to protect keeper Jack West in the Cougar net.

GCC slowly pulled together and got into a rhythm.  The Cougars took the lead after Brandon Reiner was taken down in the box and award a penalty kick.  Josh Gray calmly placed the resulting spot kick out of the keepers reach and scored what would turn out to be the only goal of the game. Genesee now has an overall record of 7-1-0 and will be back in action on Tuesday September 21st at Alfred State.
