St Charles Community College Women's Soccer Program wins Region 16 Title in 2nd Year
November 3, 2010

The St. Charles Community College, in only its second season of NJCAA competitive play, posted a 2-1 win versus Maple Woods Community College on Saturday securing the Region XVI Women’s DI Soccer Championship. The Lady Cougars continue with District play on November 5th and 6th in Council Bluffs Iowa. Other district participants include Region II champion Northern Oklahoma College, Region XI winner Iowa Western, Region XXIV winner and reigning National Champions Lewis and Clark.  St. Charles (15-4)will take on Lewis & Clark (17-1) on Friday at noon at Iowa Western Community College.  Northern Oklahoma College (6-9) faces Iowa Western Community College on Friday at 3:00pm. Winners of each game advance to the District Championship match scheduled for noon Saturday. The District Champs will continue on to the National Tournament played at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka Kansas November 17th through November 21st.

 

St. Charles Community College entered the Region XVI with a 13-4 overall record and as the number one seed. In their first tournament contest on Friday the Lady Cougars pitched a 2-0 shutout against MCCAC rival, and 2009 Region XVI Champs, Forest Park. In the championship against Maple Woods the Lady Cougars went out to a early 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman Midfield Melissa Beste. Sophomore Striker Emily Kersting was credited with an assist on the Beste goal. With score tied 1-1 in the final eight minutes of play and playing shorthanded, one man down, midfield Alexis Baez scored on 30 yard shot over the keepers head. Sophomore striker Emily Kersting was credited with an assist on the Baez goal.

 

With the victory came a host of accolades, the Cougars were crowned 2010 Region XVI Champions. Second year Head Coach Emily Holbrook was named Region XVI Coach of  the Year. Three Lady Cougars earned 1st Team All Region XVI honors and two were named to All Region 2nd team. Sophomore Midfield Alexis Baez for the second consecutive season earned All Region 1st Team. Also earning All Region 1st Team honors was freshman Striker Ashley Burbank, Ashley lead the Lady Cougars with 13 goals and 4 assists before her season was cut short by injury. Also named All Region 1st Team was freshman Defense Anna Recer. Recer was the team’s second leading scorer with 8 goals and tied for second in assists with 8. Freshman Midfield Melissa Beste and freshman Defense Kelsie Ehlers were both to the All Region 2nd Team.

 

In MCCAC conference play freshman Defense Kelsie Ehlers and freshman Midfield Megan Huffman were named to the MCCAC All Conference 1st Team. Sophomore Striker Cayla Pisciotta, freshman Striker Ashley Burbank and sophomore Striker Emily Kersting were named to the MCCAC All Conference 2nd Team. The lady Cougars finish the conference season with a 3-1 record good for a second place finish and an overall record of 15-4, a school single season record for victories.

 

The Lady Cougars will depart for Council Bluffs Thursday afternoon in preparation for their Friday match.
