Surge prepare for national tournament after 2-1 win over CCBC-Essex in district final

Cincinnati State’s men’s soccer team, making its second appearance in the NJCAA nationals in the past three seasons, has been seeded No. 6 in this year’s 12-team finals field.
The Surge, 17-5-1, will begin pool play vs. No. 10 seed Northwest College (Wyoming) at noon on Nov. 13, and faces No. 3 seed Louisburg College (N.C.) at 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 14. The winners of the four pools advance to the tournament finals on Nov. 16-17.
The national tournament is being played at Darton State College in Albany, Ga. Cincinnati State will leave for the tournament on Saturday. All matches will be televised via the NJCAA on-line network, www.njcaatv.ihigh.com.
Cincinnati State, ranked No. 9 in the most recent NJCAA poll, qualified for the nationals with a 2-1 victory over CCBC-Essex in the North Central District tournament last Saturday. Liam Doyle, a freshman from the Isle of Man, scored a pair of goals late in the second half to power the victory.
After capturing a share of the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference regular season title, the Surge won the NJCAA Region XII regional tourney with victories over Owens and Schoolcraft, both nationally-ranked teams.

Cincinnati State wins regional title

The Cincinnati State men's soccer team beat Owens Community College 2-0 and Schoolcraft College 2-1 to win the NJCAA Region XII tournament championship this past weekend.
In Saturday's semifinal match featuring the OCCAC co-champions, Cincinnati State proved to be the superior team as Justin Mitchell scored goals in the 6th and 71st minute. Goalie Ryan Strunk, who made a key save off an Owens penalty kick, recorded 7 saves in the shutout victory.
On Sunday, the Surge were able to earn retribution from last year's 2-1 regional final loss to Schoolcraft thanks to goals by freshmen Bradley Gale in the 30th minute and Austin Klueh in the 65th. Schoolcraft quickly countered with a goal in the 70th minute but were unable to even the score as Head Coach Mike Combs and the Surge claimed their second regional title in three seasons.
Cincinnati State sophomore Justin Mitchell was named tournament MVP. Goalie Ryan Strunk, defender Austin Klueh, and midfielders Liam Doyle and Joe Bradley were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Cincinnati State, who improved to 16-5-1, will host the district championship game against Baltimore County Community College- Essex on Saturday at 3:00 pm. The game will be played at the Xavier University Soccer Complex.
The winner will advance to the NJCAA National Tournament in Perimeter, Georgia.

Cincinnati State claims share of OCCAC title with 4-1 win over Owens

The Cincinnati State men’s soccer team beat Owens Community College 4-1 to earn a share of the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference regular season title on Saturday.
Cincinnati State, which have won at least a share of the OCCAC conference title 8 times in the past 10 seasons, were led by forward Bradley Gale, who scored goals in the 5th and 60th minute of the game. Sophomore Justin Mitchell finished with a goal and assist. Freshman Tyler Gumbert also chipped in with a goal of a penalty kick.
“Our energy was fantastic from start to finish. We needed a big game from Brad and he delivered today. As a team, we have built some good momentum heading into the postseason,” Head Coach Mike Combs said.
The Surge, who finish the season at 13-5-1 overall with a 5-1 record in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference, clinched a No. 3 seed in the National Junior College Athletic Assoication Region XII Tournament and will host Ancilla College in the first round on Wednesday at 5 pm. The game will be held at the Xavier University Soccer Complex.

Emily Carmosino named NJCAA "Athlete of Academic Distinction"

The National Junior College Athletic Association has named Cincinnati State defender Emily Carmosino an "Academic Athlete of Distinction" for exemplary academic status.
In her two years at Cincinnati State, Carmosino earned a 3.68 cumulative GPA and graduated with an associate's of arts degree. Emily's work ethic in the classroom attracted interest from the University of Charleston, a team who won the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America team academic award for the fifth straight season. Carmosino, who officially signed with Charleston in February, will begin working towards her bachelor's degree in Charleston's education program next fall.
"Emily has been a great presence for us on and off of the field. Charleston is getting a great defensive player and a great person," Cincinnati State Head Coach Wil Cagle says.
A NCAA Div. II program, Charleston competes in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Cincinnati State's Josh Bialecki finishes 3rd in NJCAA National Golf Championships

Cincinnati State’s Josh Bialecki placed 3rd in the 2012 National Junior College Athletic Association National Golf Tournament held this week at Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, New York.
Bialecki, a sophomore from Toledo, Ohio, shot a final round score of 76 (+4) for a tournament total of 297 (+9). Entering the final round with the lead, Rockland Community College’s Colby Lewis, who played alongside Bialecki, shot a 75(+3) and finished in 2nd place with a 293 (+3). Monroe Community College’s Shane Dobesh won the tournament with a final round of 71(-1) and a tournament best 290 (+2).
"I did not have a strong finish but I had a great time playing with Colby. Overall, this week has been a great experience," Bialecki said.
By placing in the top five, Bialecki was named a 1st Team NJCAA All-American. It marked the second consecutive year Bialecki was named to the All-American team.
"It was a great year for Josh. He is one of the best players we have ever had in my sixteen years of coaching," head coach Scott Webb says. "His work ethic and attitude on and off the course sets the bar high for future players."
