Delta College baseball making an impact

Sanford, MI – The Delta College baseball team in conjunction with 3 Disciplines Racing recently assisted in a volunteer capacity to raise over $9,000 for the Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund by serving as race administrators at the Sanford and Sun triathlon held Saturday, August 11th in Sanford, Michigan.

The primary purpose of the Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund (FWSF) is to help veterans in Michigan who return from the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns and find themselves in need of support and assistance.

“I received comments from the participants and 3D Racing that said the Delta College Baseball team were the best group of support staff ever,” said Craig Elford, race coordinator.  “I agree.  The men and women on the course were awesome and totally courteous, encouraging and helpful.”

A total of 15 players and coaches assisted in the 20K bike portion of the event, securing roadways and assisting bikers through heavy traffic areas.  Post race, the DC players were responsible for the tear down of the transition areas.  In all, over 100 hours of Delta College volunteer effort took place in order to ensure the success of the event.

“It was a long day through some pretty treacherous weather at times but well worth it,” said head coach Dan Smith.  “The men and women of the U.S. armed forces give us so much and ask so little.  An event like this – regardless of the effort involved – is a small pittance to give back compared to the freedoms we receive.”
